When does one use "gustan" versus "gusta"?

Gustan with plural things, and gusta with singular things.

Me gusta el cine. I like the cinema.

Me gustan las películas de acción. I like action movies.

Hi Welcome to the forum. Can you add to your profile your level of Spanish and English? It helps people answering to know your knowledge.

Gustar in 3 person singular and plural are a way of saying it is pleasing to me [gusta] or they are pleasing to me [gustan]

It can be used in other ways but I suggest you look at this previous answer with various links. Lazarus who has posted is a native Spanish speaker with a phenominal grasp of the intricacies of Spanish and an excellent knowledge of English with which to explain.
