Welcome to SpanishDict.

It's actually a prefix. "cardi", meaning heart. Cardio is a medical term used to reference the heart. It's of Greek origin. This link will explain it much better than I could in this post.

Cardio

Generally most people think that if the RAE accepts something, it is a Spanish word, although some people would argue that there are Spanish words that the RAE has not yet accepted.

In this case it is in the RAE as a prefix or suffix, but not a stand alone word. It would not surprise me if it is being used as a stand alone word in the exercise sense in some parts of the Spanish speaking world, however.

cardio- o -cardio.

(Del gr. ??????).

  1. elem. compos. Significa 'corazón'. Miocardio. Cardiología.
