There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Un apretón de manos es un saludo común en muchos países.

A handshake is a common greeting in many countries.

2: "Saludos desde Cancún" decía la postal.

"Greetings from Cancun" read the postcard.

Notes:

"Saludos" is one of the most common ways to sign off a formal letter or email written in Spanish. Think of it as the Spanish version of "Best" or "Sincerely"!

Me parece un poco extraño que en español la gente dice saludo al finales de hablar y en francés lo dice al principio...

It seems a little strange to me that in Spanish folk say 'saludo' at the end of talking, and in French they say it at the start...

Hoy en día cuando un hombre saluda a una mujer no le suele besar la mano, salvo que sea un hombre de costumbres muy tradicionales. El besamanos es cortesía en desuso.

Today when a man greets a woman he does not usually kiss her hand, unless he is a man of traditional customs. The kissing of hand is a disused courtesy.

Well done, porcu! Kissing seems a bit too intimate to me (even though afaik you don't actually *kiss* the hand) but I regret that bowing/curtseying has gone out of fashion. Good guys Asians in that respect. - Manity, Sep 10, 2015

Dos oficiales de la marina armada de México hacen un saludo militar al presidente de la república, durante el desfile militar del 16 de septiembre, para conmemorar el día de la Independencia de México.

Two officers of the Mexican army make a military salute to the president of the republic, during the military parade on September the 16th, to conmemorate the Independence day of Mexico.

Un funcionario es cualquier empleado del gobierno. Un oficial puede ser un empleado del gobierno, o bien un militar de rango intermedio.

During the parade, the soldiers just turn their face and look at the president while they pass in front of him when they are armed.

Cuando era miembro de la Armada, me enseñaron a hacer un saludo militar adecuado, y a veces he tenido a que reírme de algunos de los intentos que algunas personas hacen.

When I was a member of the Navy, they taught me how to do a proper military salute, and sometimes I have had to laugh at some to the attempts that some people make.

'have to' is almost always (if not always') 'tener que' he tenido que reirme - Pablo064, Sep 10, 2015
I have no idea why I did that- I use "tener que" all the time. Thanks, Pablo. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 10, 2015
It's interesting that 'have to' = 'tener' even in this context, where it's not about an obligation but more of a "couldn't help it" thing. - Manity, Sep 10, 2015

Creo que la palabra saludo debería haber sido derivarse de la palabra salud que significa "Health" y Si se cree lógicamente, hace sentido perfecto como cuando damos o mandamos nuestros saludos a alguien, en esencia, estos saludos significan que la otra persona (que recibe el saludo) sea en buena salud.

I think that the word "saludo" must have been derived from the word "salud which means "health" and if one things logically it makes perfect sense as when we give or send someone our greetings, in essence we are wishing that the other person be well and in good health..

hehe .. But I am little Jimmy with a little mind.. what do I know.. Just had a little hunch .. I might be wrong.. hehe
