contestar ( kohn-tehs-tahr' ) pronunciation

verb ( to answer, to reply )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

2: Le escribí un correo al profesor, pero nunca contestó.

It's very difficult to answer a question without knowing the answer. Only the politicians can do that.

This is known as the fifth amendment, one of our essential rights under the Constitution of the United States. A person can "take the fifth" and not answer the question. - sanlee, Aug 30, 2015

There was an old joke by Jerry Clower in which the punchline was, "That question is so simple, I'm going to have my chauffeur answer it!"

Había un chiste viejo por de Jerry Clower en que el remate era, "Esa pregunta es tan fácil que le voy a permitir a mi chófer contestarla.

Katy, I don't know where y'all are from but I loved listening to that man's accent! English learners, this is a good example of the Southern accent in American English with all "them listenin', drivin', talkin' " and other forms of relaxed speech. - Jubilado, Aug 30, 2015

La gente puede hacer toda clase de preguntas, pero no tienes que contestar a todas de ellas.

People may ask all kinds of questions, but you don’t have to answer all of them.

It is difficult to answer what the phenomenon of quantum tunneling is trying to tell us about the nature of reality- but it appears that a particle is not in any particular place until we observe it, and when we observe it it can appear sometimes on one side of a barrier and sometimes on the other side without being able to cross the barrier. Some people like to believe that a tunnel is opened int he barrier, but it is not, it is not possible, and if you want to believe that a particle exists in some location or another all the time, you have to believe in teleportation.

Muchos de nosotros hemos visto La gúia del autopista galáctico y por eso sabemos contestar la pregunta -¿ Que es el significado de Todo? Ya sabemos que la respuesta a la vida, el universo y todo es 42. No hay problema.

Many of us have seen The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and therefore we know how to answer the question : ' What is the meaning of Everything?' We know that the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is 42. Sorted.

Ojalá que alguien conteste por qué este foto oficiál de NASA muestra nuestra tierra perfectamente redonda en vez de un esferoide achatado (oblate spheroid). Claramente no es esferoide achatado, así que ¿lo que es? ¿Puede contestar? Creo que no.

I hope somebody can answer why this official NASA photo shows our Earth perfectly round instead of oblate spheroid. Clearly it's not an oblate spheroid, so, what is it?

I don't believe it's an official NASA photo...where did you get it? Do you have a link? I searched Google, but it said nothing about coming from NASA. My Uncle works for NASA. - rac1, Aug 30, 2015
Hi some suggestions :)..esta foto oficial de la NASA muestra a nuestro planeta Tierra..no es un esferoide..¿Qué es? - Pablo064, Aug 31, 2015
It's official: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blue_Marble The variance in radius(~0.2%) is miniscule and wouldn't be apparent. Also, the atmosphere will be more spherical that the surface of the earth. - roveg, Aug 31, 2015
Blue Marble is actually more narrow at the equator. That should be impossible. - Pablo-Peligroso, Sep 1, 2015

Nunca contestas mis preguntas. / You never answer my questions.

No contestaron a mi carta. / They didn’t answer my letter.

¡No me contestes! / Don’t answer back!

Yo cuestiono la idea de que todo el mundo tiene el derecho a contestar a este hilo.

I contest the idea that everyone has the right to respond to this thread. wink

Cuando Jesús les preguntó a los que querían apedrear a la mujer adúltera, "¿Quién de entre vosotros está sin pecado?" Nadie podía contestar.

When Jesus asked of those who wanted to stone the aduterous woman, "Who among you is without sin?" Nobody could answer.

(This is not a exact Bible quote--it's my interpretation.)

Cuando he estado en una ciudad nueva y le he preguntado a alguien cómo ir a un lugar específico , a menudo me ha contestado que no era de ese lugar también.

When I have been in a new city and I have asked someone how to go to a specific place, often they reply that they are a stranger too.

Hola Toda Hi everyone,

Long time no see. Learning another language, you notice how odd your primary one is. Ok, so, my comment and question is in the title or description.

2: Le escribí un correo al profesor, pero nunca contestó.

I wrote the professor an email, but he never replied.

Now, shouldn't that be correo electronico?...verdad? Yo creo. Gracias por su ayuda.

ciao
