There are other verbs you can use, such as...

Provengo de xxx.

Nací en xxx.

Although saying Soy de xxx is probably the most common one.

Vivo en California pero vengo de España. ¿Qué tal?, Pez Guiñador? (That's my Spanish for Winking Fish) - Daniela2041, Aug 28, 2015
I like it! I might change my user name to that! Thanks!! By the way, is "guiño" the noun version of that verb? And the "g" is pronounced as an "h," is that right? - Winkfish, Aug 28, 2015
Hi: "g" followed by a "u" gives it the hard sound as in "Go". I'm not even sure that "guiñador" is a real Spanis word. I just made it up from the verb form. - Daniela2041, Aug 28, 2015
Well, I like it, made up or not. Thanks! ;-) - Winkfish, Aug 28, 2015
