There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Mi prima se ganó una beca completa para ir a la universidad.

My cousin won a full scholarship to go to college.

2. Para que nos otorguen la beca tenemos que demostrar la utilidad de nuestra investigación.

For them to give us the grant, we have to demonstrate the usefulness of our research.

Las becas educativas que el gobierno da son una inversión. Cuando los recipientes de las becas comienzan a ganar dinero, se convierten en contribuyentes de impuestos para el gobierno.

Educational grants that the government gives are an investment. When the grant recipients start earning money, they become tax payers for the government.

"comienzan" OK, no subjunctive needed, because it is an ongoing/usual thing. - Daniela2041, Aug 26, 2015

Muchos estudiantes en Los EEUU no tienen suficiente dinero para asistir a la universidad porque los costos son altísimos aquí. Por eso dependen de las becas que pueden recibir si son exitosos en sus estudios en la escuela superior ("la prepa" en México). Así pude conseguir mi formación universitaria.

Many students in the USA don't have sufficient funds to attend college, because the costs are so high here. Therefore they depend on scholarships that they can receive if they are successful in their studies in High School. In this manner I was able to get my college education.

Hace muchos años, gané una beca de la Corporación Nacional de Becas de Mérito, y recuerdo que pensé qué tan pequeña que fue un cantidad de dinero muy pequeña fue y que podría haber sido mejor si mis talentos hubieran sido como los de un atleta, pero ya no pienso eso- he madurado.

Many years ago, I won a scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and I remember that I thought that it was such small quantity of money and that it might have been better if my talents had been as an athlete, but I no longer think that- I have matured.

We are all one in 7 billion (?)- unique in our own way. But the odds on that graph are far better than 1 in a million. - bosquederoble, Aug 26, 2015

Gracias, Daniela. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 26, 2015
I think that if you use 'de dinero tan pequeña' you have to complete it with something e.g 'de dinero 'tan' pequeña 'que' podría haber sido...'' but if you use 'muy' it would sound fine 'de dinero muy pequeña y que' ..como los de un atleta would better - Pablo064, Aug 27, 2015

De joven recibí una beca para viajar y fui a Australia solo porque no tenía ninguna esperanza de ganar el premio y no selecionaba muy bien, ahora desearía haber elejido un viaje a América Latina, pero bueno, al menos he visitado el país de nuestro amigo Ray..

As a youngster I won a scholarship to travel and I went to Australia, just because I did'nt have any real hope of winning the prize asnd I didn't choose well. Now I wish that I had chosen ajourney toLatin America , but well, at least I have visited the land of our friend Ray..

Is this an idiomatic expression ?? - Joydeep_Singh, Aug 26, 2015
I constructed it from scratch. DRAE and wordmagic both offer 'gown' as a definition along with schoarship, but the other dictionaries do not. I don't know that my sentence makes sense, but I like it :/ - roveg, Aug 26, 2015
Yes Dear,, I too checked it .. and I don't think that beca could mean a gown .. thats why I got confused .. but if RAE says so .. perhaps it may be a rarity :) - Joydeep_Singh, Aug 26, 2015

Cuando terminé la escuela secondario, gané una beca mancomunidad para ir a la universidad. En esos días muchos estudiantes ganaron estas becas, que pagaron los honorarios. Creo que esto era un grande ayuda a mis padres.

When I finished high school, I won a Commonwealth Scholarship to go to university. In those days many students won these scholarships, which paid the fees. I think this was a great help to my parents.
