Poner vs Meter

Poner vs Meter

I've just discovered the verb "meter" and see it used to say "put ...." where I would have used a conjugation of "poner". Is the use of "meter" common and are these verbs interchangeable?

"Meter" is common. It means to put in and is not interchangeable with "poner."

Meter = put in/insert

poner = put

Edit:

As always context has a lot to do, in both languages.

Consider the following:

  • Put it in the bag. - Pónlo/mételo en la bolsa
  • Put it where I told you. - Pónlo/mételo donde te dije

You need to read more than just the top line definition of words in the dictionary. Often the one given at the top is not the most common usage. Meter and Poner each have more than 5 screens of information about usages.
