There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

No puedo conducir y por eso no sé lo que significan la mitad de las señales de tráfico. Nos enseñan los principios básicos en la escuela pero me he encontrado en situaciones donde tenía que saber más que eso, incluso como peatona.

I can't drive and so I don't know what half the road signs mean. They teach us the basics at school but I've found myself in situations where I've needed to know more, even as a pedestrian.

La frase "sí, mi amor" significa que mi pareja (mi esposa) siempre tiene la razón. En los casos en mi otra significativa es incorrecta, consulte la frase anterior.

The phrase "yes, dear" signifies that my significant other (my wife) is always right. In cases where my significant other is wrong, refer to the previous sentence.

Mi esposa

Hay cosas en nuestras vidas que no se pueden explicar. Lo cual significan nos hace pensar y meditar y a veces simplemente creer que existen misterios.

There are things in our lives that cannot be explained. What they signify that makes us think and meditate and at times simply believe that mysteries exist.

Si necesitas la estrella del norte a saber quíen te estas, este significa te estas perdido.

If you need the North Star to know who you are, this means you are lost.

La estella del norte generalmente indica "donde" "estás" y no "quien" "eres". ¿Mejor? The North star usually tells you "where" not "who" you are. Better? - Jubilado, Aug 24, 2015
Yes, I understand that it usually means "where." My intent is to conflate the idea of seeking self-knowledge with that of terrestrial navigation. Poetic license, if you will. - roveg, Aug 24, 2015

Los resultados de la versión del experimento de la doble rendija en la que mostraron que un electrón puede interferir con sí mismo a menos que controles por cuál rendija pasa me significa para mí significan que hay algo acerca de la naturaleza subyacente de la realidad que no entendemos.

The results of the version of the double slit experiment in which they showed that an electron can interfere with itself unless you control which slit it goes through signifies to me that there is something about the underlying nature of reality that we don't understand.

I do not know if my mind is equipped to understand how half the reality(position locator?) of an electron can go through one slit, the other half through the other, and then have those halves interfere with each other to determine the final position. - bosquederoble, Aug 24, 2015
I'm unsure about 'me significa'..'para mi significan' would be clearer :D - Pablo064, Aug 24, 2015

Es muy difícil saber que significa significante en castellano, por ejemplo :El significante representa a un sujeto, pero no para otro sujeto, sino para otro significante. Claro como el barro.. Esto es lo que he aprendido hoy, pero aún no he tenido tiempo para encajarlo de verdad.

It's really hard to understand what significant means in Spanish, for example : The indicator represents a subject, but not for/to another subject, but rather, for another indicator?? Clear as mud..

This was today's lesson but I haven't had time to sort of register it yet.

Esta semana he oído un cuco reclamando cerca de aquí. Esto significa que la primavera va a llegar pronto. Los cucos aquí son especies diferentes de los en otros paises, pero tenian los mismos habitos maliciosos

This week I have heard a cuckoo calling near here. This means that spring will arrive soon. The cuckoos here are different species from those in other countries, but they have the same nasty habits.
