There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

I always find the expression very strange, 'I wouldn't recognise him if I met him in my soup'...

Sometimes I make a soup called "everything in the refrigerator soup" that consists of whatever vegetable there is in the refrigerator at the moment, like onion, garlic, celery, carrots, peppers, spinach or kale, mushrooms, etc. I use vegetable broth and pasta with some type of canned beans and tomatoes, too. It is different every time I make it.

Muchas gracias, Pablo smile

Sopa aguada

Watery or runny soup

One of the most common dishes in Mexico is what we call 'sopa aguada' or watery soup, which is basically a pasta soup in a thinned tomato puree and chicken broth.

Ingredients:

To make a watery soup you need pasta, such as noddles or star, tomatoes, cilantro, onion, garlic, pepper, oil, salt and pepper, water and chicken broth.

Directions:

Place the tomato, cilantro, garlic cloves, onion and chilis in a blender and puree until very smooth.

In deep saucepan, heat the oil and sauté the pasta until golden, about 2 minutes. Add the tomato sauce and cook for 4 minutes. Add the broth, carrot and potato, if using. Season to taste with salt. Bring to a light boil.

Cover and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until vegetables and pasta are tender, 10 to 12 minutes.

Ladle hot soup into bowls and serve with lime wedges. Garnish with chipotle chiles, salsa, avocado and queso fresco. Serve with tortillas on the side. tongue laugh

Buen proveCho! wink

¡Nunca he comido nada que requiriera tanto coraje! me esforsó tan coraje! Es cierto este cuento.

One day during my visit to Colombia, I was helping the niece of my friend in her English studies. The girl's mother asked me if I wanted lunch. What she was serving was "sopa de menudo" which is made with cow's stomach. Although it is a meal that is very much to the liking of this Colombian family it is not so for me. Out of consideration for the lady of the house I accepted her kind offer and ate the delicious soup but with much pepper and hot pepper sauce. While I was eating I looked up and saw through the window a cow in the pasture outside. Never have I eaten a meal that required so much courage! True story.

Whenever I can't think what to cook for dinner, I make soup. It is always easy. I only need some vegetables, a can of tomatoes and a can of chickpeas or other beans. It is good to add stock, wine and some herbs. When it is served I sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on top.

I have always liked making and eating soups, but my wife thinks that soups should not be eaten during the summer and only allows me to make a clam chowder when we go to the beach for the family reunion as an exception. Nonetheless, my wife is in another city this weekend with our daughters to try on wedding dresses so yesterday I cooked a black bean and ham soup.
