There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Los ojos del niño brillaban cuando recibió el premio.

The boy's eyes shone when he won the prize.

2. De verdad brillaste en el papel de Peter Pan.

You were truly outstanding in the role of Peter Pan.

Pablo.... to "illuminate the eyes" is not exactly what I meant. When you shine a light, you point the light source at an object. This may be difficult to translate. Gracias :-)! - Jraider, Aug 12, 2015

Muchos escritores de ciencia ficción han soñado con gente que visite visitando otras estrellas, y a veces me pregunto si alguien mirará algún día otro sol brillando por el cielo, o si nos quedaremos en nuestro sistema solar para siempre- pero estoy bastante seguro de que moriré antes de saberlo.

Many science fiction writers have dreamed of people visiting other stars, and at times I wonder if someone someday will look at another sun shining in the sky, or if we will be stuck in our solar system forever- but I am pretty sure that I will die before knowing.

Ian- that is a separate question, but the sheer size of the Universe makes that seem a realistic probability. But whether any are near enough that we have a chance of encountering them is harder to gauge. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 11, 2015

Un día con la ayuda de mis amigos y el estudio, mi habilidad en español brillará. Ahora ya puedo hablar com con buen accento acento. Pero con este accento genial digo cosa estupidas como: "el mano", "la lingua" (para "el idioma"), "un tribu", "la Papa" (¡pobre Francisco!).

¿Me explico?

Some day with the help of my friends and studies, my skill in Spanish will shine. I already can speak with a good accent. But with this brilliant accent I say stupid things like: (Sorry the lack of gender equivalency does not translate my Spanish words, but you all get the idea, ¿Vale?)
