raro ( rah'-roh )

adjective ( strange; rare; scarce )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. ¡Qué raro¡ Hay luces prendidas en esa casa abandonada cerca de las vías de tren.

How strange! There are lights on in that abandoned house by the train tracks.

2. La paleontóloga desenterró un fósil de una especie de ballena rara.

The paleontologist unearthed the fossil of a rare species of whale.

The National Sport of Afghanistan is very strange . It is called Buzkashi. In order to play we need two teams of 10 riders, rather like in Polo, but this is a sport that might make even the most hardened gauchos tremble, because, just to start with the ball is a goat or a ewe with it's head chopped off and you have to score a goal by dragging the body of the animal past the goal-posts of the opposing team. The game is played without time-limits, a match can take days, just like in cricket. The referees should carry arms. Let's play, my friends!

After "temer" you only need to use the infinitive. "temo quedar hambriento" At least that's what the grammar books say, but I hear people say it as you have done. Especially if they are English speakers. - Daniela2041, Aug 10, 2015

En inglés hay una expresión; Raro como dientes de una gallina. Aquí tienen una guapa.

In English there is an expression: Rare as hen's teeth. Here's a pretty chickie.

There is no political statement in my project. Maybe a fashion statement, but that is all. smile

Las cosas se ponían muy raro cuando el jefe de la junta de jefes del Estado Mayor planteó el tendencia de la moda de camuflaje en medio de la audiencia del Comité de Servicios Armados del Senado.

Things got really weird when the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff brought up the camouflage fashion trend in the middle of the Senate Armed Services committee hearing.

Hoy leí un artículo de opinión escrito por alguien de Zimbabue, quien encuentra muy rara la polémica sobre el dentista que mató un león muy rara y me parece quien es alguien que cree que la sensibilidad a la situación de los animales salvajes pertenece sólo a los que no están en peligro debido a esos animales.

Today I read an opinion piece written by someone from Zimbabwe, who finds the controversy about the dentist who killed a lion very strange, and it seems to me who is someone who thinks that sensitivity to the plight of wild animals belongs only to those who are not in danger due to those animals.

Interesting article. I still say, only kill if you are defending yourself, or it's for food, but that's just my opinion. - rac1, Aug 9, 2015
I am not taking any sides in what I wrote (but will admit that I am not a fan of trophy hunting)- but I am a fan of exposing oneself to a diversity of opinions in order to understand all the facets of something. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 9, 2015
I would guess that more people are killed by say tractors, or domestic bulls than by lions, but I take your point, Bosque, there are always several sides to an argument. - annierats, Aug 9, 2015
...muy raro..delos animales.. :) - Pablo064, Aug 10, 2015
Why raro when I refer to polémica? - bosquederoble, Aug 10, 2015
I think Pablo misunderstood you. If you change your word order a little it would be easier to understand. My suggestion " ---- quien encuentra rara la polémica ----etc." - Daniela2041, Aug 10, 2015
Thanks Pablo and Daniela- I think that is a definite improvement. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 10, 2015

Creo que es muy raro que la gente quiera mejor servicios pero también quiere menos impuestos. ¿No entiende que los dos son conectados?

I think it is very strange that people want better services but also want to pay less tax. Don't they understand the two are connected?
