how to specify sons instead of just children

how to specify sons instead of just children

I I understand it correctly: If I say tengo tres hijos - that is I have 3 children

If I say tengo tres hijas - that is: I have 3 daughters (specifying daughters)

but how would I say I have 3 sons. - (to specify sons)

Another option would be "tengo tres hijos varones" but I do not know what is the most natural.

Thanks , that is a new word/expression for me. Have not seen it mentioned in any lessons. Afraid I will not remember , so will make note of it. - lfayb, Aug 8, 2015

So, if I am reading something, that just says hijos, would I normally take that to mean children instead of sons?
