The translator says, "Lamento por hacerte esperar." - but I didn't think you could put the pronoun between two infinitives...

??

Siento hacerte esperar -- this is a standard formulation, I would say.

You could also say : Lamento la tardanza. ( Sorry I'm late// took so long)

Pimsleur keeps using the expression 'Perdón por estar tarde', which seems to cover this. When doing Pimsleur I formed the impression that much of it was aimed at business people (and not very punctual ones)... wink

In Mexico it´s more natural to say something simple: Perdón la tardanza (followed by an explanation if you want).
