Seguir un curso

Hola a todos,

I need to say that I took a class in an email. While I've seen some threads on this, I have some questions about the tense and stuff.

I've seen: cursar un curso, seguir un curso y tomar un curso and I was wondering whether I should use preterite or imperfect (the course is completed) and the formality of each one. If y'all have other verbs for "take a class" please chime in.

If the course has been completed I personally wouldn't use the verb seguir. I would use the preterite and say:
Hice un curso de cerámica el año pasado.
Completé un curso de cerámica el año pasado.
Tomé un curso de cerámica el año pasado.

Cursar un curso is right, but since the word cursar and curso are similar, when saying it, it sounds repetitive and strange. I'd use it for instance in a sentence like this:
Cursé una materia en la facultad llamada Cultura.
You can also talk about la cursada:
La cursada fue placentera porque la profesora hacía las clases muy llevaderas.
