There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. No creo que apagué las tenacillas antes de salir del apartamento hoy.

I don't think I turned off the curling iron before leaving the apartment today.

2. Aun después de tres horas, los bomberos no han logrado apagar el incendio.

Even after three hours, firefighters have been unable to put out the fire.

Donde trabajo instalaron sensores que apagan las luces si no detectan movimiento. Si la puerta está abierta puede bloquear hasta la mitad del cuarto y por eso, muy temprano en la mañana antes de que los demás hayan llegado, con frecuencia las luces se me apagan mientras está haciendo trabajo usando con la computadora.

Where I work they installed sensors that turn off the lights if they don't detect motion. If the door is open it can block up to half the room and so, very early in the morning before everybody else has arrived, frequently the lights go out on me while I am doing work using with the computer.

Yes, I know what you mean. I had a job where I sat all day and the same thing happened. I had to raise my arms to get the lights to go on, too. - sanlee, Jul 17, 2015

Jraider: What is the diference between "turn off" and "turn out"? - LuisCache, Jul 17, 2015
Luis..... It's basically the same thing. I'm going to guess and say "turn out" probably originated from the old days when they used oil lanterns. They had to turn a valve to put out the light. - Jraider, Jul 17, 2015
Gracias, Jraider! - LuisCache, Jul 17, 2015

This is something I see at hospitals and Doctor's offices so often and yet just about everyone there is talking or texting on their cell. It's very annoying. - rac1, Jul 17, 2015
I guess they will eventually have to confiscate the cell phones at the door. - rac1, Jul 17, 2015
Actually, they are starting to allow it at hospitals, and in aircraft, Rac, because, actually, nothing happens. Whilst you drive a car , welll that's another story.. - annierats, Jul 17, 2015
I have a flip phone and it is not easy to text, but I have been doing a lot of it lately (never while driving, of course). - sanlee, Jul 18, 2015

Tragic. - rac1, Jul 17, 2015
Is "A alguien se le" permitted here grammatically? I thought A + person was only used for Direct or Indirect Objects. Here, "someone" is the subject. Is "Alguien se olvidó de apagar la estufa" better? - DilKen, Jul 17, 2015
Ken: Both forms are correct. In the first sentence "apagar" is the subject, and "alguien" is the indirect object. - LuisCache, Jul 17, 2015
In the second case, "Alguien " is the subject. You could also say: "Alguien olvidó apagar la estufa". - LuisCache, Jul 17, 2015
Luis; I guess this is an example of what we call the accidental or No Fault se - DilKen, Jul 17, 2015
