There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Good one Ray. I think leaving out the personal a before mujer is correct in this case because you are not speaking of a specific woman. Even if you were, the woman is the subject in a sentence like this an the personal a is used for objects. - DilKen, Jul 6, 2015
Me gusta "unA" mujer.:) - Daniela2041, Jul 6, 2015

Hay jinetes de todos típos en el mundo de caballos, jinetes de carreras, jinetes de polo, jinetes de doma clásica, vaqueros, jinetes de saltos y muchos otros pero todos los buenos jinetes tienen una cosa en común, tienen las manos suaves.

Yhere are lots of differents sorts of riders in the world of horses, jockeys, polo-players, dressage riders, cowboys, show-jumpers and many others but all the good riders have one thing in common, they have good hands.

Es extraño que usamos lija gruesa para hacer suave la madera.

It's strange that we use coarse sandpaper to make wood smooth.

And then to make it even smoother we use finer and finer sandpapers and perhaps steel wool. :) - DilKen, Jul 6, 2015
Es extraño que usemos--(subjunctive)"para hacer suave la madera" is better word order. I would use the verb "suavizar" but that might violate the rules a little. - Daniela2041, Jul 6, 2015

Habla suavemente y lleva un gran garrote; así llegarás lejos. Este refrán fue hecho famoso por Theodore Roosevelt, el presidente de Los Estados Unidos de 1901 - 1909. Nikita Khrushchev, el dirigente de la Unión Soviética entre 1953 y 1964, no creía en el primer parte de este dicho.

Speak softly and carry a big stick and you will go far. This saying was made famous by Theodore Roosevelt, the President of The United States from 1901 - 1909. Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union between 1953 and 1964, did not believe in the first part of this saying.

to remove a screw stuck sometimes it is better to use a little bit of coca cola and be soft with the wrench than hit it strongly with a hammer.

Para sacar un torni?lo atascado, aveces es mejor usar un poco de coca cola y ser suave con la llave inglesa que golpearle rudamente con un martillo

To remove (capitalization) a stuck screw (adjective before noun) "than TO hit it strongly" ........ "to hit it hard" sounds more natural than "to hit it strongly." - DilKen, Jul 6, 2015

I take note, is OK. I also make suggestions when usage is correct but uncommon. "I hear you" or "I understand" would be more common. Gotcha! (meaning the same thing) would be colloquial, but very, very common. - DilKen, Jul 6, 2015

Una expresión para describir suavidad es "Tan suave como el culito de un bebé" , porque la piel de un bebé es maravillosamente blando y suave.

An expression to describe softness is "As soft as a baby's bottom" because the skin of a baby is wonderfully soft and smooth.

Me acordé de un viejo anuncio de un jabón que decía: "¿Qué te hiciste que estás tan suavecita?"

I remembered an old soap add, that said: 'What did you do to yourself that your skin is so soft?'
