Este ha sido un año de entierros y sevicios fúnebres para mi. Antes de las Navidades se murio mi suegro y celebramos el servicio de cremación una semana después y un mes más tarde un servicio de memoria con una merienda en la sala de fiestas del pueblo . Fue una occasión más agradable que lo esperado.Después mi suegra nos invitó a enterrar las cenizas en el camposanto de la iglesia del pueblo en Exmoor donde vivía.
Unas semanas más tarde falleció mi madre y en Suecia hay que esperar mas tiempo para enterrar a los cádavers, casi un mes . Para ella celebramos un sevicio fúnebre muy bonito en la iglesia de su pueblo aúnque ella no era creyente, pero la verdad es que no hay buenas alternativas para enterrar a los ateos, y hacen falta servicios que no sean religiosos. Por eso nos parecía mejor celebrar el servicio en la iglesia e ir al crematorio después, porque los a los crematorios les falta ambiente .
This has been a year of funerals and funeral services of various types for me . Before Christmas my father-in-law died and for him we held a cremation service a week after his death and then a memorial service with tea in the village hall month later. Later on my mother-in-law invited us to bury his ashes in the church-yard of the the village on Exmoor where he lived.
A few weeks later my mother passed away and in Sweden you have to wait longer to dispose of the dead bodies. It takes almost a month. For her, we held a beautiful funeral service in the church of her village even though she was not religious but the truth is that there is a lack of alternative sites where atheists can be buried and there is also a lack of services that are not religious. Because of this it seemed best to hold the service in the church and go to the crematorium afterwards as the crematoriums don't have much atmosphere.
Hay una expresión en inglés, 'dead ringer' or 'campanero muerto' (no es lo mismo que 'compañero') que quiere decir una persona que se parece otra persona, como doble or gemelo. Mi explicacíon favorita para el origin de esta expresión es que en el pasado (antes de la medicina moderna así que los médicos no podían estar seguros si tu estuvieras muerto de veras) la gente quería estar enterrada con una pequeña campanilla en el ataúd. Así si una persona se despertara mientras enterrada pudo hacer una campanada para pedir que alguién abriera la tumba. Luego si tu vieras a esta persona en la calle el día después de su entierro, hubieras dicho ' ¡ Allí está un campanero muerto !'...
There's an expression in English, 'dead ringer' meaning someone who resembles another, like a Doppelganger or twin. My favourite explanation for the origin of this expression is that in past (before modern medicine, thus physicians couldn't be sure if you were really dead) folk wanted to be buried with a little bell in their coffins. Therefore, if someone work up while buried they could ring their bell to call someone to unearth the grave. Then if you were to see this person in the street the day after their burial, you would say 'There goes a dead ringer !'...
In most cases, I tried to translate the English saying quite literally into Spanish. Which ones are not very common in Spanish?
