chai chico

Question

I just had a peruvian woman say 'chai chico'. the 'chai' is a typo of 'chau' but should I be insulted that she called me 'boy'? (I'm 44)

Bmke, I would say probably, not...I don't think she was meaning to insult you,! I think that she probably just used and meant it in the same casual and friendly way that people in England use the word 'mate' as a friendly term of affection, In Spain women often use guapo as a friendly term of affection and the men use guapa,

Communication is mostly body language, then tone of voice and lastly the words account for about 7 % so without hearing the way she used it I coudn't be 100% certain. However, if she said it in a friendly and/or lighthearted way. youv'e really nothing to be concerned about!

Even when I'm acting in a professional capacity I still occasionally have elderly women call me 'son' (I'm approaching middle age, married and with children of whom there are photos on display in my office, so they know all this). It's probably just a term a term of endearment. Nowadays I'm much too old for this, but I still remember the last time I was checked for ID when buying booze... I was 35 !! Insulted ? I was thrilled...
