There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Es buena idea establecer una transferencia mensual a tu cuenta de ahorro.

It's a good idea to set up a monthly transfer to your savings account.

2. Solo me quedan tres pagos mensuales más antes de terminar de pagar mi carro.

I only have three monthly payments left before having paid off my car. .

Recibimos un número de revistas mensuales, pero sólo una semanal, y ésa es mi favorita.

We receive a number of monthly magazines, but only one weekly, and that one is my favorite.

In English, the terms "bimonthly" and "biweekly" are, unfortunately, ambiguous since they can mean twice a month/week or every other month/week. This ambiguity does not exist in Spanish. The following table illustrates this phenomena and shows the appropriate Spanish words to use in these situations. In English, in most cases, the same word can be used as a noun, an adjective or an adverb, while Spanish has different words for each.

Another interesting thing I discovered while researching this topic is that the Spanish word for fortnight - quincena - literally means every 15 days, while the standard definition of fortnight in English is 14 days or two weeks. If a Spanish speaker really wants to say every two weeks, which would be fortnightly or biweekly (one meaning) in English I think he would have to say "cada dos semanas."

By the way, if I were the King of English, I would enforce a new rule that bimonthly can ONLY mean every other month. After all, there is a perfectly good word for "twice a month" -- semimonthly.

English and Spanish Words Which Refer to Various Time Periods

They use quincena for lettings etc. 14 days, 15 nights, I think.. Anyway, it is in eveyday use. - annierats, Jun 21, 2015
Annie: did you mean to say 14 nights, 15 days? Usually it is one more day than the number of nights. dndndnd - 4 days, 3 nights. At least this is the case for hotel stays, etc. - DilKen, Jun 21, 2015
I have never, ever stayed in a hotel or apartment that long, so I've never considered the matter, Ken, I take your word for it! - annierats, Jun 21, 2015
How about 'bimestral'? ;) - Pablo064, Jun 21, 2015

Si tienes que vivir de un ingreso mensual , ten cuidado y economizalo bien, sino tienes problemas en el final de mes.

If you have to live on a monthly income, be careful and economize it well, otherwise you will have problems at the end of the month.

Como soy mujer sé desmasiado de los problemas mensuales que tenemos nosotras con la regla, los cambios hormonales, los dolores de cabeza, la tensión pre-menstrual y la preoccupación cuando no llega la regla el día esperado. ¡ Que barbaridad!

As I'm a woman I know only too much about the monthly problems that we women suffer with menstruation, hormonal changes, headaches and pre-menstrual tension and the worries when the curse doesn't arrive on the expected day. Effing nuisance!

¿Por qué hay más pagos mensual por año que meses en el año?

Why are there more monthly payments per year than months in the year?
