Can "cambiar" be used in the same way as "transbordo" in reference to changing trains/buses?

Since cambiar is a verb, and transbordo is a noun, they cannot by definition be used in the same way, but if you look at a definition of transbordar (a verb, but I think it would hold for "hacer transbordo"), you can see cambiar is used in the definition:

http://es.thefreedictionary.com/transbordar

transbordar

Likewise transbordo is defined using cambio:

http://es.thefreedictionary.com/transbordo

transbordo
