There is a good book on the market called "501 Spanish verbs." It is available on Amazon.com and other places. Every college book store has one. About 1/4 of Spanish verbs have some kind of irregularity. (my guess.)
At times it seems like all of them !! Although I'm sure this isn't true. Dani's estimate seems about right (& I certainly wouldn't want to begin an argument with her). However, although only about 25% are irregular, I would venture to suggest that this quarter probably includes the commonest verbs, so you'll encounter a lot of them very often. This is bad in the sense that they're irregular, therefore a pain. However, it's also good in the sense that their frequent recurrence helps you get used to them pretty quickly, and even within their 'irregularness' there are patterns of regularity.
English too is redolent with misbehaving verbs, but native-speakers usually aren't even aware of their being irregular because they're so common. That said, even as a native-speaker of English, and having spoken it for a few decades now, I still have difficulty with some English verbs. For example, I can never quite get my head around the fact that I lie down in the present yet lay down in the past. I always feel like I should say I lied down.
