verb ( to give (as a gift), to give away )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Mi hijo ha pedido la mano de su novia y le ha regalado un anhillo de compromiso. Le hizo la propuesta de matrimonio en la playa, que romántico, aunque como han vivido juntos hace dos o tres años no sé para que les sirve casarse pero ambos están muy emocionados sobre el tema de la boda.

My son has asked his girlfriend to marry him and he has given her an engagement ring. He proposed to her on the beach ,how romantic. As they have already lived together for two or three years I see little point in them getting married but they are both very excited about the wedding.

I have learned through the years that many people from Central America uses the word regular as "to give" or "lending" Ex: Me regalas un lápiz, por favor. Can you give me a pencil, please or can you lend me a pencil please.

Choose well , what you're going to give as a gift; for example not present an anti-alcoholic with wine.

Regaló todos sus bienes. / He gave away all his possessions.

En esa tienda regalan los CDs. / CDs are dirt cheap in that shop.

Another way is "I'm giving it to you." The literal translation of "I give it to you" sounds a little caveman, but "I give it to you freely" sounds fine. "I'm giving it to you" doesn't necessarily mean permanently while Ian's original does. - DilKen, Jun 17, 2015

The one with CD's is interesting. One could say "They are practically giving away the CD's in that store." If you left out the "practically" most people would understand that you are exaggerating...not literally saying the CD's are free. - DilKen, Jun 17, 2015

En algunas culturas,es grosero rechazar un regalo. Usted debe aceptar, puede regalar a alguien.

In some cultures,it is rude to refuse a gift. You should accept it, you can give it to someone else.
