Translating the News - Issue #1
I read several of these local news articles every day. Today I thought I might try posting one to see if anyone is interested in reading and understanding Spanish as it is actually written in news reports here in Baja.
You can post your attempts if you would like or keep them to yourself. Your choice. Don't worry about giving a word for word translation. I think it is more important to see if you (and I) "get the gist" of the article. This may help with confidence building, or not.

Council vans [that's what we call them in the UK] display a new livery including the slogan 'La Paz: First & Foremost' emblazoned with two chequered flags.
One should recall that on 6 March, upon declaring his intention to run, Monroy Sánchez, Off-Road department chief, stated that his time in Baja 1000 would equip him to govern La Paz, and likened his skill in managing vehicles with that of the administrative responsibility incumbent of La Paz's city hall.
'I relish challenges, being the leader of Baja 1000, having come second on seven previous occasions, whatever they meant, but now I am aiming for first place and it's also my fervent ambition to bring to an end this tenth-rate city hall and its fancy-shmancy university-educated Ethela Ponce... There's a lot of responsibility here, I get that, as in Baja 1000, we are very much stakeholders, yet no matter where it may lead', he said on that occasion...
