Need a good German translator, just like SpanishDict

Hi! I just LOVE SpanishDict. I use it in many ways, but my favorite use is to have it on in the background (another tab) while studying my Spanish. Then whenever I have a question about the meaning of a word, or need to see a verb conjugation, I just enter and click. I have not found any sites like this for German. I'm not looking for lessons, I have that. I am looking for a translator/dictionary/conjugator just like SpanishDict. There are many dictionaries out there, but I have not found one as good as, or as easy to use as SpanishDict. Any suggestions?

I've never encountered a language-learning site quite like SpanishDict for any other language. I can't say definitively that they don't exist because I haven't searched exhaustively. However, I found SpanishDict on the net very easily, yet cursory searches for similar for other languages have yielded no joy.

The formula for SpanishDict is excellent. The combination of community and fun makes the learning experience very enjoyable and encouraging. This is vital in sustaining the learner, particularly an older, independent, self-study learner over the course of what is, let's face it, not really an easy task, and one which is often thankless.

Sometimes I suspect the administrators and mods don't really appreciate what a magic formula they've concocted. It really is distilled genius.

It should be templated for other major languages. That it's not is bordering on sinful.

There have been several of us who also love French and have tried to start a French site similar to this one, but no such luck. French is much more widely known and spoken than German, so good luck on finding anything great in that language- although "Memrise.com" has lot of good features in many languages.

That site also does French Dani - I added the link. xx - ian-hill, Jun 8, 2015
Yes, I do use Memrise for German. They have a nice basic course and vocab lists. I also am doing the Duolingo course in German. Very addicting. But neither one has the translator/dictionary that I like to have in the background, like SpanishDict. - happyquilter, Jun 8, 2015
When I was offered the opportunity t learn French or German at Secondary (High) school there was really no contest! lol I had already been learning French and did not much like the sound of the German language! - FELIZ77, Jun 8, 2015
It always seemed too harsh (gutteral) to me ...but that is only my opinion, I prefer the sound of Swedish, having watched many of the original Wallander films with English subtitles. I have also met some Swedish people in my life, and from my limited... - FELIZ77, Jun 8, 2015
experience they are much more 'easy going' (relaxed) and easy to get along with, although some of the younger generation Germans who also speak Engish are quite frienldy when you meet them on holiday! - FELIZ77, Jun 8, 2015

That does look like a very good site in general, but I don't see the type of translator/dictionary I am looking for. However, I am going to check out the grammar lessons! Thanks! - happyquilter, Jun 7, 2015
Bitte schön amiga. - ian-hill, Jun 7, 2015
You could use Google translate - https://translate.google.com/#auto - that is quite good. - ian-hill, Jun 7, 2015
Yes, Google Translate is my favorite so far. Thanks! - happyquilter, Jun 8, 2015

Hello Happy Quitter,

Welcome to the SpanishDict forum!. smile

The best suggestion that I can offer you is to try Busuu.com which incorporates both a learning site with teaching modules, grammar features and a forum/ leraningcommunity of sorts but not unique like the one in SpanishDict,.although they do offer chatrooms which allow you to chat with individuals. They offer many languages including, of course: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, and many other languages etc...

Here is the link to Busuu.com: enter link description here

You should also check out 'Word reference.com' which has dictionaries, language translators, and a forum for asking questions: enter link description here

I hope this helps smile

I really appreciate everyone's efforts to help me. This is the nicest community! Unfortunately I guess I will have to continue with my "piecemeal" approach to learning German. Thanks everyone!
