Pregunta Cien Años de Soledad

The book has no chapter numbers, but in my book on page 85 a new chapter starts out "El coronel Aureliano Buendia promovió treinta y dos levantamientos y los perdió todos. Tuvo diecisiete hijos varones de diecisiete mujeres distintas, que fueron exterminados uno tras otro en un solo noche, antes de que el mayor cumpliera treinta y cinco años." Then it goes on to say "llegó a ser comandante general de las fuerzas revolucionarias, con jurisdicción y mando de una frontera a la otra, y el hombre mas temido por el gobierno..."

I am assuming that in this paragraph the book skipped forward several decades.

I have several questions: 1) Doesn't it it say that he engaged in 32 battles and lost every single one? If he is such a terrible general that he would lose every battle how does he rise to the top position of the revolutionary forces and become the most feared person by the government? 2) He had 17 sons by 17 different women and all were massacred in a single night. Did I understand this correctly? Why would all of his 17 sons by 17 different women be together at the same time?

Thanks for your help, seems like a really weird paragraph that doesn't flow with everything I'd read up till this point.

Levantamiento = rebellion// uprising

Most rebellions are lost.

As for time, you will see that in this book it is almost circular, like a wheel, whilst being a straight line at the same time.. You will see. And I can't remeber all of it, it is abook full of endless disasters and interesting people, and it is also a bit hard to keep track of the persons as so many have the same name..

Just keep going, I expect there will be explanations as to how all the sons by the different women came to be killed on the same night, being in the same place might not have been necessary.. Enjoy it, your understanding is excellent, I found it took me absolutely ages to read it.
