There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

.

Examples:

1. Es mejor haber amado y perdido que no haber amado nunca.

It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

2. Amar a alguien es algo que uno escoge hacer.

Loving someone is something you choose to do. .

Notes:

The verb "querer" is also frequently used in Spanish to talk about loving someone (whether a romantic partner, a family member, or a friend). .

Te amo muchísimo y te amaré para siempre y sufro en silencio por ti, porque no te fijas en mi.

I love you very much and I will love you forever and I suffer in silence for you, because you do not take any notice of me.

El amor es tan malinterpretado. Cada día alguien es asesinado por una persona que una vez le dijo, “Te amo”.

Love is so misunderstood. Every day someone is murdered by a person who once said, “I love you.”

Aunque hay los que quienes han argumentado que las emociones de los animales no deberían compararse con las de los seres humanos, y hacer de lo contrario sería antropomorfismo, la mayoría de los científicos han llegado a creer lo que los que interactúan estrechamente con los animales siempre han sabido, que hay animales que son capaz capaces de amar a otros.

Although there are those that have argued that the emotions of animals should not be compared with those of human beings, and to do otherwise would be anthropomorphism, the majority of scientists have come to believe that which those who interact closely with animals always have known, that there are animals that are capable of loving others.

Although many female swans have offspring by an ' outside partner'. But then, so do people, enough said. I verily believe animals are capable of love. - annierats, Jun 5, 2015
I absolutely agree. The love shown by dogs -and even sometimes by cats is astounding. I even saw a video of a mother gorilla caring for some little animal as if it were her very own. - Daniela2041, Jun 5, 2015
Romantic love is a similar instinct to mate, it's seldom selfless, sometimes it's for life, sometimes not. We are a lot more like animals than we like to admit! - jennysk, Jun 5, 2015

I love you. (to your lover or spouse)
Te amo. (para tu amante o para tu esposo/a)

I love you. (to a friend, a family member or your lover/spouse)
Te quiero. (para amigos, para miembros de su familia o para tu amante/esposo-a)

By the way, "I love you" is not usually said to friends in the United States, particularly amongst men. If it is said, it is usually done in a light-hearted way such as: You may be stupid, but I love you anyway man. smile

I love swimming. (the Spanish version with querar means I want to swim)
Quiero nadar. (incorrecto, esto significa "tengo ganas de o un deseo para nadar")
Me encanta nadar. (correcto)

I like swimming very much.
Me gusta mucho nadar.

I love swimming. (it is uncommon to use amor here, that is for true love)
Amo nadar. (poco común, nadar no es tu amante)

Only use "querer" for "amar" for human beings.
Sólo usa "querer" por "amar" para los seres humanos.

Be careful when using querer, because it can also mean "want." It depends on the context.

Ten cuidado cuando se usa "querer" porque también lo puede significa un deseo. Depende en el contexto.

Only use "amar" for "true love"
Sólo usa "amar" por "amor verdadero"

People in some countries say "Te amo" to their parents or grandparents, in others, this is not said. They say "Te quiero."
Las personas en algunos países dicen "Te amo" a sus padres o a sus abuelos, en otros, esto no es dicho. Dicen "Te quiero."

Some Spanish speakers say that "Te amo" is usually said only in soap operas or romantic movies.
Algunos hispanohablantes dicen que "Te amo", en general, sólo es dicho en las telenovelas o en las películas romanticas.

Here are a couple of quotes from a spanish.about.com forum:

Ibaquerena: Te quiero can be both for people close to you or for friends. It all depends on the importance you give to the words. You can tell a good friend te quiero and it may just mean the "I love you" that some friends tell one another without any romantic connotation. On the other hand, you an tell your wife te quiero mucho and it may mean "I love you" in the sense a lover would use it. Te amo is mostly used among people who are learning Spanish from a textbook or in telenovelas.

Medaly: My husband is from the Canary Islands and I am from Argentina. If I were to say te amo to my husband, rather than taking me seriously he would think I have turned "telenovela" on him. I would probably end up laughing on the floor if he were to say something like that to me.

Te quiero is the most common way to express romantic love (and human affection in general) in the real world. Te amo belongs to the world of telenovelas and romance novels. I am sure that other native speakers will coincide with me on that one.

Lissah3: But my husband from Venezuela always said te amo to me. Do you think that means maybe he never meant it?

Medaly: Well, he probably does mean it. Still it is not that common to use it outside of telenovelas and boleros.

Marijosé: Te quiero and te amo mean the same but are used in different contexts. Te quiero is used regarding love but in any context: family, friends and one's partner. Te amo and anything related to the verb amar is used only when you speak about true and romantic love. Therefore is not so common to hear it, and it is frequently used in novels, poetry and soaps.

Thank you Tiempo for not only correcting my grammar, but also for telling me where I was making false assertions. I was hoping you would do that. I added a couple sentences, please review them. Gracias. - DilKen, Jun 5, 2015

I wonder what hispanic speaker stated such thing! you can say 'te amo' to your parents your children girlfriend pet whoever if you feel it so! en las 'telenovelas' o..'no es dicho. Dicen 'te quiero' (no 'se') unless you say 'Se dice 'te quiero'..' - Pablo064, Jun 5, 2015
regarding to 'Only use "querer" for "amar" for human beings.' you can hear people sayingfor instance 'lo quiero mucho a este celular, no lo voy a cambiar.' or children sayin 'quiero mucho a mi osito de peluche' ;) - Pablo064, Jun 5, 2015
Thank Tiempo. Good to know about what you said. Here is a link that refers to Te amo and telenovas and also te amo vs te quiero. Appears to be significant differences between regions. - DilKen, Jun 5, 2015
Re querer and amar the comment should be toned down, and just warn about the potential for confusion because it can mean either love or want depending on the context,. - DilKen, Jun 5, 2015
'Te amo belongs to the world of telenovelas and romance novels. I am sure that other native speakers will coincide with me on that one.' pff it makes me laugh - Pablo064, Jun 7, 2015

Yo vi este graffiti en una pared en la parte vieja de Salamanca. Creo que es un mensaje de un novio a la que ama. ¿O crees que es de una chica para un chico?

I saw this graffiti on a wall in the old part of Salamanca. I think it is a message from a boyfriend to the one he loves. Or do you think it is from a girl to a boy?

This is my new puppy, she was rescued from the road-side. It is a young Spanish Greyhound.

I told my husband that I wasn't going to have another dog until Wolfie dies, and my husband agreed with me, but when my neighbour and I found this poor little puppy running loose amongst all the traffic I changed my mind, an, well, here we are. Our family has a new mamber and I think I will come to love her in time. She is good-natured and willing to love whoever feeds her.

Mi mujer y yo amamos el fútbol... nunca miramos los deportes en la televisión en casa, pero cuando hay un partido de fútbol muy importante (como el final de la Champions este sábado) vamos a un bar para mirarlo con los otros aficionados.

My wife and I love soccer... we never watch sports on television at home, but when there is an important soccer game (like the Champions League final this Saturday) we go to a bar to watch it with the other fans.
