Writing a Thank You Note

Question

Hola!

I would like to write a thank you note to a coworker who speaks mostly Spanish. Here's what I came up with:

Querida Doña Maria, Muchas gracias por darme un regalo de cumpleaños usted. Me encantan mis nuevos pendientes. ¡Cariñas y un abrazo!

(or in English: Dear Maria, Thank you very much for my birthday gift. I love my new earrings. Best wishes and a hug!)

Please let me know if this is okay. The hardest part of Spanish for me is knowing when I'm being too familiar.

Maybe in South America the courtesy form "Doña" is ok. In Spain, women don't like that form because it looks like you are talking to a very old woman. They prefer to be called "Señora", but this sounds also "so old" for many women.

Hola Pablo - in Bolivia it is used a lot - as is the male Don. Both used to show respect or sometimes ownership - of a shop for example. - ian-hill, Jun 2, 2015
