inesperado ( een-ehs-peh-rah'-doh )

adjective ( unexpected, unforeseen )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile .

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Recibimos una noticia inesperada hoy: el jefe dijo que la empresa entera iba a Costa Rica.

We received some unexpected news today: the boss said that the entire company was going to Costa Rica.

2. Dado a circunstancias inesperadas, nuestro invitado de honor no puede estar esta noche.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our guest of honor cannot be here tonight.

Aquí está una cosa inesperada acerca de mi viaje a España : porque he cambiado las zonas horarias, puedo ser una de las personas tempranas en contribuir a la Palabra del Día.

Here is an unexpected thing about my trip to Spain: because I have changed time zones I can be one of the early people to contribute to the Word of the Day.

Después de esperar, lo que me parecía horas, lo inesperado finalmente pasó. ¡Gané!

After waiting, for what seemed like hours to me, the unexpected finally happened. I won!

Esperando, decidí terminar de leer mi libro.

While waiting, I decided to finish reading my book.

Tuve un retraso inesperado, así que esperando, decidí terminar de leer mi libro.

I had an unexpected delay, so while waiting, I decided to finish reading my book.

Cuando mi marido se cayó y se rompió la pierna me parecía un accidente inesperado, pero la pura verdad es que no hay muchos accidentes esperados aunque hay accidentes cantados.

When my husband fell and broke his leg I thought of it as an unexpected accident, but really, there aren't many expected accidents, although there are accidents that are waiting to happen.

Lo más inesperado en mi vida es cuando saqué la calificación más alta (A+) en mi clase de inglés en la escuela secundaria.

Hi Daniela: Nice. How about "was" instead of "is" in the English? - DilKen, May 31, 2015
Congrats. A little late, however. ♥ - rac1, May 31, 2015
Because it still "is". It's a minor semantic distinction illustrating my present thought regarding the event. Somebody will probably want to take me to task for doing the same thing in Spanish. :) - Daniela2041, May 31, 2015
Youi could just add '' still''. The most unexpected moment of my life still is..( suggestion only) - annierats, May 31, 2015

The world famous clairvoyant, 'Rosie Lee Taylor, had to cancel her well-publicised public meeting due to unforseen (unexpected) circumstances! wink

¡La clarividente de fama mundial, 'Rosie Lee Taylor', tuvo que cancelar su reunión publica bien anunciada debido a circunstancias inesperadas! wink

By the way, I just made up the clairvoyant's name / Por cierto, compuse./ inventé el nombre de la clarividente. ;}

Muchas gracias por tus correcciones, Daniela smile

I have removed the definite article las from in front of the word circunstancias and the word por preceding the word debido. wink

Corrijan mi español si es necesario, por favor smile

Hi, Feliz. A little correction here. "tuvo" and "bien anunciada debido a circunstansias inesperadas--"( I looked for a verb "publicitar" in hopes--but D A R N! Couldn't find it) . :( - Daniela2041, May 31, 2015
Thank you very much for the corrections, Daniela. :) I have already self-corrected the word tuve to tuvo probably while you were posting lol ! ;) - FELIZ77, May 31, 2015
I will make the other correcctions according to your recommendations ;) :):) - FELIZ77, May 31, 2015
Dani / Feliz : wouldn't publicar / publicada work here? - DilKen, May 31, 2015
Thank you, Ken and yes it might work although I think that the verb anunciar is ideal in this context/here :) - FELIZ77, May 31, 2015
Anunciar is the best one in this case. @Feliz--The word "por" in front of"debido" still needs to be removed, ¿vale? - Daniela2041, May 31, 2015
Sí, vale - FELIZ77, Jun 1, 2015

Ian: I don't think "eso" for "that" is what you mean here. I think you mean, "the fact that" which I think would be "El hecho de que Joseph Butler".. The English is fine, but take a look at what I mean for the Spanish. Gracias. - DilKen, May 31, 2015
Eso Joseph Butler is OK if you mean That guy Joseph Butler, but from from the rest of your sentence I think you mean "the fact that - DilKen, May 31, 2015
Of course it wasn't, corruption must go on ..yes Ken 'Que Blatter fuera elegido como...' :) - Pablo064, May 31, 2015
Thanks, Ian. xo - rac1, May 31, 2015
Gracias amigos. - ian-hill, May 31, 2015
Gracias Ian & Tiempo: by suggesting this change I have learned something. Instead of "El hecho de que X" you can just say "El que X" or "Que X" in such situations and they all mean the same thing. - DilKen, May 31, 2015
I also learned the weird (I think) rule that you have to use the subjunctive even though you are stating that something is a fact. - DilKen, May 31, 2015
This stems from the idea that you are not declaring something to be so, which would use the indicative, but merely mentioning it as a known fact. Weird, ¿No? :) - DilKen, May 31, 2015
