Recommendations for Spanish Music...

I realise that music can be a very personal thing. However, it's also a very important thing, and can be very useful when learning another language.

For me, I've dedicated the last 8 or 9 months of my life to trying to learn some Spanish, & occasionally I've tried dipping my toe into the music of the Spanish language.

I regret to have to say that so far nothing has made me fall in love with Spanish as a sung language.

Let's put this to rights: probably my most favourite songs are in English (I'm a native speaker, so hardly surprising), yet there are certain French songs that I adore & find just absolutely beautiful... Now, here I must ask myself, well, French is my second language, so surely that's why ? But then I realise I've heard songs in German or Russian (that I don't understand at all) which I love... yet I'm finding it hard to find a Spanish band with whom I could fall in love.

Don't get me wrong, it's not the music, it's the words, how they flow and don't strike a chord with me...

Why not post a few of your favorite songs so we can get a feel for the type of music you like. That will make making recommendations easier.

There's a band that started out here in New Orleans called the Iguanas. I used to watch them live at the local clubs here, and it's one of the bands, I'm sure, that helped my wife fall in love with me.

They are normal guys (kids when I first saw them 20 or so years ago) but they play a kind of modern day funk Latin bluesy New Orleans . Their first two albums are the best, I think. Great sax duos. Most of their songs, maybe 60 or 70%, are in Spanish, fairly easy to me now. Good stuff, and it can be fun to learn a bit of Spanish this way. One of my favorite tunes is "Para Donde Vas."

I'll try to put a link to a sample. Bear with me.

Of course, music is very individual, and no one is going to like the same thing. (My wife and I can find a few songs we both actually like, and maybe a few fewer that we would both actively want to listen to and not just tolerate from the other.

In addition to that caveat, this will not be helpful, as it is an obscure band from Costa Rica that no one has Heard of.

That said, since I don't have Facebook I can't play it (but with your e-mail by PM I could send as attachements the two songs I have of theirs):

I love Sortilegio- I listened to it before I even tried to learn Spanish. I also have Un Día Común off the album, which I also like.

If spotify or Rdio work for you, you can probably listen- I can never remember my wife's Facebook so I can't check to be sure. I refuse Facebook and it won't let me do it without it.
