grabar ( grah-bahr' )

verb ( to record; to engrave )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile .

Guidelines:

.

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Sufjan Stevens grabó algunas de las canciones de su nuevo disco en un iPhone.

Sufjan Stevens recorded some of the songs from his new album on his iPhone.

2. El nombre de mi esposa está grabado en la parte interior de mi anillo de boda.

My wife's name is engraved on the inside of my wedding ring.

Me gustan mucho las lápidas sepulcrales que tienen grabados divertidos. Los grabadores de estas lápidas debieron de tener mucha diversión divertirse grabandolas. Aquí son pocos algunas con traducciones en inglés. size>

I really like tombstones that have humorous engravings. The engravers of these tombstones must have had fun engraving them. Here are a few with translations in English. size>

I would say 'Aquí algunas con traducciones..' very funny, I thought of a 'bruja' too :D - Pablo064, May 27, 2015
Gracia Tiempo: did you mean to leave out a verb? - DilKen, May 27, 2015

Jeje!! Excelente Ken :-)! - Jraider, May 27, 2015
Sorry what verb are you talking about? ''( - Pablo064, May 27, 2015
Tiempo: In "Aquí algunas con traducciones" I don't see a verb. I was thinking there should be either "son" or ëstán or hay" between Aquí and algunas. ¿No? - DilKen, May 27, 2015
Tiempo: I added another sentence. Please correct it if necessary. - DilKen, May 27, 2015
These are hilarious, Ken. - AnnRon, May 27, 2015
oh sorry, you only could add 'hay' but it's not necessary at all in this case :) yeah but 'have fun' is 'divertirse' not 'tener diversión' ...'debieron haberse divertido mucho. se deben haber divertido mucho' :) - Pablo064, May 28, 2015

Tengo una momoria como una grabadora, pero, a veces (gran suspiro) se me olvida meter el casete.

I have a memory like a tape recorder but at times (big sigh) I forget to put in the cassette.

A menudo, las memorias dolorosas están grabadas más firmemente en la mente de la gente. Las quejas son más numerosas que los elogios.

Often, painful memories are engraved more firmly on people’s minds. Complaints are more numerous than compliments.

Tengo un número de cintas de video sin etiqueta que se recordaron grabaron hace muchos años, y ya no tengo una videograbadora que funciona funcione, y por eso quedan en una pila en el rincón hasta que encuentra encuentre un método de verlas para determinar si todavía tienen valor.

I have a number of video cassettes without labels that were recorded many years ago, and I no longer have a videocassette recorder that works, and so they are sitting in a pile in the corner until I find a way of watching them to see if they still are worth anything.

Thanks Tiempo, I meant to use subjunctive after hasta que, and don't know why I didn't. I forgot./didn't think of it with the other, but it is clear when pointed out. :) - bosquederoble, May 27, 2015
I would get rid of the videos if I knew them all to be old movies, but I am scared some of them might be home videos of the children or something. :) - bosquederoble, May 27, 2015
I'm in the same boat, but I do have a VCR. I'm just too lazy to go through all of them. - Sassette, May 27, 2015
Well surely there is a way to preserve them, especially if they are of the kids. - rac1, May 27, 2015
Oh there are programs that can convert them, I would just need to buy and updated one, but I used to have one that would feed vcr input into a computer file- I think it was for whatever was before windows 7, as it doesn't work in window 7. - bosquederoble, May 27, 2015

La fecha de mi casamiento está grabado en la parte interior de mi anillo de boda al lado de las fechas de nacimiento de mis hijos. Así que no tengo explicación por olvidar ni mi aniversario de boda ni los cumpleaños de los niños. Cuando estoy anciano voy a tener otro anillo grabado con mi numero de teléfono y quizás mi propio nombre también...

My wedding date is engraved on the inside of my wedding ring beside my kids' dates of birth. Therefore I have no excuse for forgetting my wedding anniversary of the kids' birthdays. When I'm older I'm going to get another ring engraved with my telephone number and maybe my own name...

The mountain's law

I carved your name next to mine,

intertwined, into a maguey's leaf

as a proof before the mountain's law

that we were there in love.

La ley del monte

Grabé en la penca de un maguey tu nombre

Juntito al mío, entrelazados.

Como una prueba de la ley del monte

Que ahí estuvimos, enamorados.
