pegar ( peh-gahr' )

verb ( to hit; to stick, to glue )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.
.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile .

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:
.

1. Si no dejas de pegar a tu hermano, me voy a enojar.

If you don't stop hitting your brother, I am going to get angry.

2. Primero vamos a recortar las letras, y después las vamos a pegar a la cartulina.

First we're going to cut out the letters, and then we're going to glue them onto the poster board.

Ha sido treinta y siete años hace nuestra boda. Creo que voy a pegar con mi esposa un poco más.

It has been thirty-seven years since our wedding. I believe I'll stick with my wife a little more.

En este sitio, si no sabes cómo hacer el cortar y pegar, puedas tener un gran problema en poner las fotos y los enlaces en tus respuestas.

In this site, if you don't know how to do a cut and paste, you could have to have a big problem in putting on the pictures and links in your answers.

Tengo que poner algunas cartas en el buzón pero primero tengo que pegar los sellos en las cartas.

I have to put some letters in the mailbox, but first I have to stick the stamps on the letter.

En fútbol, es emocionante cuando un remate pega en el palo.

In soccer, it is exciting when a shot hits the post.

Pegarse = to stick

But this always amuses me.

A plane takes off = it unsticks itself.

Despegar = take off.

Cada día me tiro unas palabras españolas nuevas hacia el cerebro esperando que una o dos van a pegar allí... Es como tirar lodo a una pared...

Every day I throw a few new Spanish words at my mind in the hope that one or two will stick... It's like throwing mud at a wall...

No me gustan los niños tímidos que siempre están pegados a las faldas de sus madres porque creo que se hacen hombres que les pegan a sus mujeres.

I don't like shy little boys that cling to their mothers skirts because I believe that they grow into men that beat their wives.

jeje, aunque en verdad es bueno pensar antes de decir algo. :) - crucesignatus, May 24, 2015
Maybe you mean..."or I will forget"? - rac1, May 24, 2015
The SD dictionary has "fall behind" for quedarse atrás. Cruce: do you mean you have to post this one quickly so you can get on to all your other SD activities so you won't fall behind on them? - DilKen, May 24, 2015

Puede ser que antes las mujeres se hayan dejado de ser pegadas, pero ahora ellas son totalmente conscientes de sus derechos y además son competentes en los deportes de combate.

.

It can be that earlier the women let themselves to be beaten, but nowedays they are completely conscious of their rights and also they are competent in combat sports.

Me alegro de que hoy en día no haya televisores encima de los pasillos en los aviones. Una vez me pegué un golpe en la cabeza contra uno de aquellos.

I am glad that there are no televisions above the aisles in the aircrafts nowadays. Once I hit my head against one of those.

Pegó clavó la diana en la pared, lanzó sus dardos y e hizo diana una y otra vez, pegándola clavándola cada vez con más fuerza , pero los dardos no se pegaron clavaron porque había comprado el tipo equivocado para la diana, y por eso sus amigos lo encasillaron como idiota.

He pegged the dartboard to the wall, launched his darts and made a bulls-eye over and over again, pegging it with force each time, but the darts didn't stick because he had bought the wrong type for the dartboard, and so his friends pegged him as an idiot.

encasillar is a new word for me. thanks for expanding my vocabulary. - Sassette, May 24, 2015
Whilst correct, here nobody wil understand a word. I once tried to explain my husband's passion for el tiro en blanco, and that was casi impossible, I think darts will fall on deaf ears. - annierats, May 24, 2015
fits' in with the idea of casilla. I'm sure it's no coincidence. - Sassette, May 24, 2015
I'd use ''clavar"..Clavó la diana..dardos e hizo..clavándola cada vez con mas fuerza..no se clavaron porque,,, jeje where did you read 'pegar dianas' Bosque? maybe in some country they say in that way - Pablo064, May 24, 2015
Hahahahaha - rac1, May 24, 2015
@tiempo u otro hispanohablante. El uso de "diana" por "bull's eye" es algo nuevo para mí. Me puedes dar más informació sobre esto? En un PM si prefieres. - Daniela2041, May 25, 2015
Thanks, Tiempo- I suppose it would have been a good sentence if the word was clavar. That use of pegar was just something I thought I would try. :) - bosquederoble, May 25, 2015

De niña jugaba a "pégale la cola al burro" con mucha frecuencia en los aniversarios juveniles.

As a little girl I used to play "pin the tail on the donkey" quite often at children's birthday parties.
