There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Si hace buen tiempo este fin de semana, quizá saquemos el barco en el lago.

If the weather is good this weekend, maybe we'll take the boat out on the lake.

2. Los barcos de los vikingos que se usaron para cruzar el Atlántico se conocían como "knarrs".

The viking ships that were used to cross the Atlantic were known as "knarrs."

La nave El Vasa fue destinada a convertirse en el orgullo de la armada sueca durante la guerra con Polonia de los años 1620, pero fue un gran desastre nacional cuando naufragó durante su viaje inaugural, el domingo 10 de agosto de 1628, sin salir del puerto de Estocolmo. Que vergüenza, el barco más bien armado del reino se hundió al fondo del mar donde se quedó hasta el año 1961 cuando fue rescatado y ahora sigue como la atracción turística más famosa de Estocolmo.

The Wasa was destined to become the pride of the Swedish navy during the war with Poland during the 1620's but it was a great national disaster when she sank during her maiden voyage on Sunday the 10th of August 1628, without leaving harbour, in Stockholm. The shame of it! The most heavily armed ship of the kingdom sank to the bottom of the sea, where she stayed until until rescued in 1961 and now she is the most famous tourist attraction in Stockholm.

@ Cruce: This is for the History Lesson thread as well, really. And if you visit Stockhol, do go to the Vasa museum, it's memorable. - annierats, May 20, 2015
Gracias Annie por la invitación, procuraré hacerlo virtualmente. :) - crucesignatus, May 20, 2015
'La' nave...'fue destinadA a convertirse el orgullo' muy buena historia! what a pity when something was supposed had to be a pride ends up being a failure '' it's like 'well there go the best we did' ''( - Pablo064, May 20, 2015
How did she sink? What was the cause? - rac1, May 20, 2015
Emm, they did not fasten all the cargo and cannons, and in a gentle breeze, she listed and in front of 1000's of spectators, she sank, with nearly all aboard.. - annierats, May 21, 2015

Please do not vote for me; I just enjoy sharing cool smile

Pensé en una idea cuando estaba trabajando a en una agencia de publicidad prestigiosa: poner anunicos dirigidos a las mujeres en las cubiertas de los barcos de guerra. Me pareció una gran idea se debe debido al número creciente de las mujeres en las fuerzas armadas. Muchas mujeres habrían visto esos anuncios. Por desgracia, mi jefe pensaba creyó que yo estaba loco. Me despidieron en seguida. hmmm

I thought of an idea when I was working at a prestigious advertising agency: placing ads directed at women on the decks of warships. I thought it was a great idea due to the growing number of women in the armed forces. Many women would have seen those ads. Unfortunately, my boss thought I was crazy. I got fired on the spot.

Puedo asimilar el amor como si fuera como un barco. Este sale del puerto, como el primer momento en que uno ve la calma y belleza del mismo hacia la naturaleza. También se puede decir como el primer momento en que uno lo conoce. Luego vienen las olas y tormentas que ponen a prueba el "barco". Si llega al destino, este es bueno y duradero.

I can relate love with a boat. This sails of port, like the first moment that one sees the beauty and tranquility towards nature. Also one can say it is the first time one meets it. Then comes the waves and storms to put the "boat" to the test. If this reaches the destination, it is good and durable.

(This is what happens when my brain is bored ... it starts to be poetic raspberry )

Por favor, no confundas el Barça con una barca.

Please, don't confuse "el Barça" (the soccer team) with "una barca" (a little boat).

I know, I fudged on the Word of the Day, but "barca" and "barco" are very close in meaning. - mstivers, May 21, 2015
But you read it as 'barSa' and barZa in Spain :) - Pablo064, May 21, 2015
Gracias, amigo. ¿Qué tal? - rac1, May 21, 2015
Muy contento. - mstivers, May 21, 2015
tiempo_de_es, I had a friend who used to say "Barca" with a hard c, meaning the team, and I would say, "no, that's a boat!" - mstivers, May 21, 2015
There is anearby village here called La Barca and it is prounounced with a hard k, at least when you buy bus-tickets. - annierats, May 21, 2015
