I'm a lifeguard and if someone is in the pool and I need to politely get their attention what should I say?

Hello Russ,

Welcome to the SpanishDict forum smile

You can say,

Disculpe, (señor ) /Desculpe (señora /señorita)

= Excuse me, (sir) / Excuse me, (madam, miss)

Disculpe carries the implied meaning: " I am sorry to bother/interrupt you, but......( I need your attention)

You can also use it in the street to get someone's attention at an appropriate moment if you wish to ask them for directions! I have often used it in this way when on holiday in Spain and even in London once with a mother and son from Ecuador...always with positive results (no one ever got offended by me using this form of address! wink)

The word disculpe comes from the verb disculpar to excuse.

I hope this helps smile
