verb ( to rest )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

.

1. Después de dar una caminata de dos horas por el bosque, descansamos al lado de un río.

After taking a two-hour hike through the woods, we rested next to a river.

2. He tenido un día muy ajetreado y quiero descansar un rato.

I've had a very busy day and I want to rest for a bit.

Hay que no descansar demasiado. Estás muerto durante mucho tiempo, y hay mucho que hacer antes de eso.

One shouldn't rest too much. You're dead a long time, and there's a lot to do before then.

As I am now,

Soon you shall be,

So, prepare, my friend,

To be with me...

Como estoy ahora,

Pronto estarás,

Así que, amigo,

Preparate para estar conmigo...

Great post, Jubilado! And a tricky one to translate into Spanish. Maybe I would say: "... decidió descansar la séptima parte de su tiempo". - LuisCache, May 15, 2015

The translation of you Spanish would be "I have rested too much already..." "Already I have rested so much" doesn't sound natural to me in English. To me "Okay, I've rested more than enough, it's (not "is") time...." sounds very natural. - Jubilado, May 15, 2015
go with Jubilado's comments. He's right on the money. - Sassette, May 15, 2015

Cuando vi la Copa Mundial de Fútbol de 2014 me di cuenta de algo que quizás sea una razón por la que cual los anunciantes estadounidenses no quisieran que el deporte de fútbol se hiciera demasiado popular en los Estados Unidos- excepto cuando los jugadores descansan durante el medio tiempo, no hay pausas- en contraste con los deportes más populares en la televisión en los Estados Unidos- y por eso no se pueden transmitir los anuncios a en intervalos regulares.

When I watched the FIFA World Cup in 2014 I realized something that might be a reason that the American advertisers would not want the sport of soccer to become too popular in the United States- except when the players rest at half-time, there are no pauses- in contrast to the most popular sports on the television in the United States- and so the advertisements could not be aired at regular intervals.

yes, it is different in that way. Most of the time when I tune in to see the score of a popular game here in the US there are ads running and I have to wait for the ads to finish before I can get an update. So many ads in sporting events. - Sassette, May 15, 2015
Who wants to bet that they will find a way to advertise even while the game is in progress? - Jraider, May 15, 2015
yeah, they can split the screen. Looks like good use of subjuctive in your sentence. Of course, tiempo will probably have a final say on all that. - Sassette, May 15, 2015
Good point! - LuisCache, May 15, 2015
Never thought of that, you have a point. - rac1, May 15, 2015
.por la cual los anunciante..no quisieran que el futbol se hiciera demasiado popular...mas populares...en intervalos regulares... yesterday I went to the Stadium and it ended up with incidents I got to my house very late and I had to get up very early :( - Pablo064, May 15, 2015
Gracias, Tiempo. :) - bosquederoble, May 15, 2015
At least my subjunctive choices seem to have worked. :) - bosquederoble, May 15, 2015
yes of course it works - Pablo064, May 16, 2015

Ojalá que mi perro, Wolfie, descansara un poco más para que tuvieramos menos accidentes y problemas.

If only Wolfie, my dog, would rest a bit more so that we would have less accidents and problems.
