¡ Ya basta ! ...or I'll go tonto

Question

I thought I'd share this little new discovery of mine in Spanish, which made me chuckle: Ya basta, meaning 'enough is enough' or 'enough already' (American Eng.).

With a little alteration to the end, this becomes a very common, rather profane Scottish expression that you might shout at someone who's just stolen your last chips (French fries).

Incidentally, tonto is also used in Scotland with a similar meaning to the Spanish word, although it has more of a sense of uncontrollable fervour/rage.

Word association memorisation techniques can be great fun at times !!

(Incidentally, 'mon' means 'come on')...

To avoid the profane Scottish expression while speaking Spanish in Scotland, you can say: ¡Ya estuvo bueno! (with proper intonation the same intensity as "Ya basta").

But we can also say: ¡Basta ya!
