There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. La audiencia estaba sentada esperando a que comenzara el concierto.

The audience was seated waiting for the concert to begin.

2. La asistente de vuelo le pidió a los pasajeros que permanecieran sentados.

The flight attendant asked the passengers to remain seated.

Pasar demasiado tiempo sentado sin estirar las piernas hace que corras el riesgo de una embolia pulmonar, y por eso cuando vuelo, siempre elijo un asiento del pasillo para poder ponerme de pie facilmente de vez en cuando.

Spending too much time seated without stretching the legs causes you to run the risk of a pulmonary embolism, and so when I fly, I always choose an aisle seat so that I can easily stand up every once in a while.

When a place name in English is plural it needs a "the" in front of it. :) - ian-hill, May 10, 2015
Cruce: I agree with Rac's comments:) I have a question for you. Why "fue" instead of "era" here? Or would either be OK? I would have thought "era" because this occurred over a lengthy period of time. - DilKen, May 10, 2015
Good use of the word. - Jubilado, May 10, 2015
Gracias por las correcciones y el apoyo amigos. :) - crucesignatus, May 10, 2015
@Ken, sería al revés, "era", al ser pretérito imperfecto, indicaría que la acción ha ocurrido hace poco; mientras que "fue", como pretérito perfecto simple, indica que el hecho es anterior al presente y sin vinculación con él. :) - crucesignatus, May 10, 2015

Los Simpson prefieren quedarse sentados juntos en el sofá viendo la televisíon.

The Simpsons prefer to remain seated together on the sofa while watching television.

A Los Simpson les gusta sentarse juntos en el sofá cuando ven la televisión.

The Simpsons like to sit together on the sofa when they watch television.

Or could it be?:

A Los Simpson se les gusta sentar juntos en el sofá mientras ven la televisión.

I found a website that indicates that the reflexive pronoun (se in this case) needs to be attached to the reflexive verb when using a reflexive verb with gustar. In other words, my last sentence is incorrect.

wrong place the only way possible is 'les gusta sentarse juntos' if I had to say that I'd say "A los Simpsons les gusta sentarse juntos a mirar la tele' so you did it well :) - Pablo064, May 10, 2015
Tiempo, if you come round my way I´ll give you a big abrazo, I was thinking sentarse juntos, how nice to be right for once! xxx - annierats, May 10, 2015
Tiempo: Muchas gracias. By the way, could you explain the use of "a" in "juntos a mirar" Is there a construction of "a + infinitive" that I'm not familiar with? - DilKen, May 10, 2015
Hope they don't have any more children or pets. There will not be room for them all on the sofa. lol - rac1, May 10, 2015
mmm this construction is always like this 'a mirar' but I can assure that it is the same with the other verbs ;) - Pablo064, May 10, 2015
Tiempo: I assume you meant to write "can't assure" - DilKen, May 11, 2015

You know when you are fluent in Spanish? When the preterite and subjunctive don't sneak up and bite you. Porque no domino el idioma no puedo decir eso en español.

He pasado la tarde pegada a mi asiento en el sofa, mirando la competición equestre de concurso completo desde Badminton en Inglaterra. El ganador fue el maravilloso jinete William Fox-Pitt, sentado muy tranquilo sobre su caballo entero, Chilli Morning, como un rey.

I have spent the afternoon glued to my seat in the sofa, watching the horse trials from Badminton in England. The winner was the fantastic rider, William Fox -Pitt, calmly seated on his stallion Chilly Morning, like a king.

No es saludable quedarse sentado todo el día en una oficina. Actualmente, muchos empleados están trabajando en una computadora todo el día, y por eso muchos lugares de trabajo están proporcionando los escritorios de pie, en el que el empleado puede trabajar de pie. Mi hijo, que es muy alto, tiene uno de estos, y es mucho mejor para su espalda.

It is not healthy to sit all day in an office. These days, many employees are working at a computer all day, and because of this many workplaces are providing standing desks, at which the employee can work standing up. My son, who is very tall, has one of these and it is much better for his back.
