There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Los maestros tuvieron que separar a los alumnos que estaban luchando en el pasillo.

The teachers had to separate the students who were wrestling in the hallway.

2. El paciente necesita el apoyo de su familia para luchar contra la enfermedad.

The patient needs his family's support to fight against the illness.

Para mi, la supuesta pelea lucha del siglo fue una desperdecio de dinero.

In my opinion, the so-called fight of the century was a waste of money.

Recuerdas el viejo anuncio de cigarrillos, "¡Nosotros los fumadores de Tareyton prefieren preferimos luchar antes que cambio cambiar!"

Remember the old cigarette advertisement, "Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than switch!"

Tareyton

Esto no es un endoso de fumar.
This is not an endorsement for smoking.

Yes, I remember it, including the grammatical error of using "us" instead of "we." :) - DilKen, May 6, 2015
@kenhuizenga With proper grammer they might have been mistaken for lawyers... no cool black eye for "We Tareyton smokers would rather litigate than switch!" ;) - jrschenk, May 6, 2015
jrschenk: I agree, sometimes slogans with grammatical errors are more effective. I thought it would be interesting to point out, however, since this is a language site. Ciao. - DilKen, May 6, 2015

Todas las primaveras lucho contra las malas hierbas, pero siempre parece que pierdo unas pocas que echan semillas, o semillas entran volando del jardín de un vecino, o decido plantar alguna planta que se propaga mejor de lo que había esperado, y la lucha nunca cesa.

Every spring I fight the weeds, but it always seem that I miss a few that go to seed, or seeds blow in from the garden of a neighbor, or I decide to plant some plant that spreads better than I had expected, and the struggle never ends.

Nice one Cruce. I don't know the story, but do you want to say "generous" in English? Generous means a person who gives a lot. Would "noble" be better? Noble = of good breeding, born into an important family. - DilKen, May 6, 2015
La nobleza del Caballero Carmelo está en su generosidad y honestidad, aunque también era de Linaje. Pensaba usar "magnanimus"; pero tú dirás amigo, ¿Cómo puedo expresar eso con una sola palabra?. - crucesignatus, May 6, 2015
No lo sé. Perhaps noble capture this also because it can also mean "of high morals" Use more than one word to translate if that is what is called for. - DilKen, May 6, 2015
Parece que sí puedo usar noble, en ambos idiomas, see this meaning: noble = adjective: having high moral qualities. http://www.rhymezone.com/r/rhyme.cgi?Word=noble&org1=syl&org2=l&org3=y&typeofrhyme=def - crucesignatus, May 6, 2015

Is "les" OK for the final pronoun here, or should it be "los"? I found references that matar should use the direct object and would only use "le" with leísmo, but not "les" because the RAE only accepts le for lo in singular. - DilKen, May 6, 2015
