There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. ¿Por qué siempre tiene la oficina del dentista revistas viejas?

Why does the dentist's office always have old magazines?

2 Su tesis se está publicando en una de las revistas científicas más importantes.

His thesis is being published in one of the most important scientific journals.

Yo siempre espero que haya buenas revistas en las oficinas de los médicos porque necesito algo para distraer a mis padres y ayudarles a relajarse.

I always hope that there are good magazines in the doctors' offices because I need something with which to distract my parents and help them to relax.

The inspection was at four o'clock in the morning, very early morning, we all left to bathe and to clean the block. That was a very long day...

Bueno días Cruce. I suggest changing "had been" to "was" and "go out" to "went" or "left" and "would be" to "was" - DilKen, May 5, 2015
I realize that your Spanish sentence would translate to the English you wrote, but the whole sentence would sound unnatural in English and much more natural with the suggested revisions. - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Gracias Ken por las correcciones y buen día también para ti. :) - crucesignatus, May 5, 2015

Las revistas de corazón están tratando de echar un vistazo en la vida de personajes famosos.

Gossip magazines are trying to catch a glimpse into the lives of celebrities.

Compré una revista de chismes, y la al haberla leído, me sentí un poco como basura pervertido.

I bought a gossip magazine, and having read it, I felt a little dirty.

Hola Ken 'y al haberla leído..' 'pervertido' is a little strong ;) - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
I just thought the same thing before reading your post and changed it to contaminado, is this better? Or could I used sucio? - DilKen, May 5, 2015
you can say 'y 'al' haberla leído me sentí' or '(without 'al')haberla leído me hizo sentir...' I'd say 'me sentí una basura' jajaj but yes 'sucio' is okay :) - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
Gracias a Tiempo: could you explain the use of "al" here. I didn't notice it in your original suggestion, and I'm not familiar with that usage and why it would be there in one case and not the other. (made me feel vs. I felt) - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Tiempo: I think I answered my own question by doing a google search. Using "al + haberla leído" is like saying "upon having read it" which seems fine to me. - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Tiempo: I guess I still don't understand why you wouldn't use the "al" when you say "me hizo sentir"..." instead of "me sentí... - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Tiempo: would "como basura" "like trash" be OK here? "me sientí una basura" seems to translate to "I felt a trash/garbage" instead of "I felt like trash/garbage" - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Take a shower ken ;-))!!!! - Jraider, May 5, 2015
O tal vez lee la Biblia :) - DilKen, May 5, 2015
It was a personal opinion yes it would be 'like a trash' jeje with 'a little' it should be 'un poco basura,,,' yep I'd use it too what I said is that you can't use 'me sentí' without 'al' before haberla :) - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
Tiempo: so you are saying the sentir + a noun can mean feeling like that noun...so sentir can mean "feel like" without the "como"? - DilKen, May 5, 2015
when you for example say 'me siento un estúpido' you are sayin that you are a stupid and not that you feel like a stupid mm maybe the right would be 'I feel just like a trash' I don't know if it clarifies something jeje - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
Thanks, sorry for "beating this horse to death." - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Tiempo, most interesting comments although I will avoid this in conversation, myself. - annierats, May 5, 2015

Yo solía tener que guardar todos los ejemplares de mi revista científica favorita para enviárselos a mi madre, pero este año mi hermana le pagó una suscripción.

I used to have to save all the issues of my favorite scientific magazine in order to send them to my mother, but this year my sister paid for a subscription for her.

I loved reading them too but I don't have time it is not an excuse and although it seems hard to believe making the corrections here takes me a lot of time - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
btw for some reason I would take the gender from 'revistas' 'para enviárselas a' but I suppose it's correct ''( - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
Thanks, Tiempo. It is easy to believe. Doing corrections is a difficult job and I hope everyone recognizes and appreciates the effort that it takes you. "Doing" the corrections is more natural than "making" to me, although we make corrections. :) - bosquederoble, May 5, 2015
I guess "make" works for me on individual corrections, but "do" is better for "the corrections" (as a whole)- I would not mind the input of other English speakers on that. :) - bosquederoble, May 5, 2015
I like "making the corrections" approximately 1.5 times more than "doing the corrections" :) Actually, what we are doing here is "suggesting corrections," right? - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Thank you so much I understand perfectly! okay suggesting is better I guess - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
Interesting Ken- so maybe it is just me? :) - bosquederoble, May 5, 2015
My comment about 1.5 times better was meant to suggest that either making or doing would be OK and just personal preference. It is not surprising that you would have a different personal preference:) - DilKen, May 5, 2015
It is interesting to note that hacer in Spanish can be either "to do" or "to make" although, of course, many times some other verb would be used in Spanish to translate the English "do" or "make" - DilKen, May 5, 2015
I appreciate your helpful suggestions tiempo and ken :-)! - Jraider, May 5, 2015
Thank you Jraider it was just a bosque's comment I don't expect any thanks ;) - Pablo064, May 5, 2015

Buenos días Ian: I thought that while you use the gerund in English here that you are supposed to use the Spanish infinitive: i.e. "Leer una revista..." translates to "Reading a magazine" - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Or at least they hope it does....:) - rac1, May 5, 2015
I agree with Ken :) - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
One day I will work out the idiosyncracies of the Spanish Language. ;) - ian-hill, May 5, 2015
Would "Leer una revista **se** ayuda a revisar sus opiniones" using the impersonal se to mean "Reading a magazine helps one to revise their opinions" be OK here? - DilKen, May 5, 2015
I read my favorite magazine for the articles ;-)))))!!!!! - Jraider, May 5, 2015
Ken I think that you mean 'leer una revista 'te/le' ayuda...' - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
Gracias. How about: Se puede leer una revista para ayudar a revisar sus opiniones. One (a person, or people) can read a magazine in order to help to revise their opinions. Does this an your revised sentence mean basically the same thing? - DilKen, May 5, 2015
I just read about using an infinitive to start a sentence and I understand better now how it can be used to state a fact in general, sort of like the impersonal se but easier.:) - DilKen, May 5, 2015

Novio: Vale, ¿Podrías darme la revista, por favor?

Boyfriend: Give me the magazine.

Boyfriend: OK, could you give me the magazine please?
Girlfriend: Thank you, that's better.

Tiempo: Depending on the tone of voice "Whatever you want dear" could be OK or a little snarky:) Snarky = snide = sarcástico, malicioso. Same with "Lo que quieras? - DilKen, May 5, 2015

Buenos días Raj: I would leave out the first "Ellas" here. Subject pronouns are usually stated in Spanish only for emphasis or clarity. The context and the conjugation of ayudar makes it clear that you are referring to the magazines. - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Question: should the qué here have the accent to make it a question word or not? Or would either be OK? - DilKen, May 5, 2015
Yes when I see subject I think of persons but they turned out to be magazines :D either 'me pregunto qué haría..' or 'me pregunto lo que haría...' :) - Pablo064, May 5, 2015

En dos semanas mi marido tiene una cita de revisión médical para ver come se sana su tobillo roto, después de la operacíón. Creo que tendrámos que esperar unos tres horas a menos, y que será una buena idea traer un libro porque no hay muchas revistas en las hospitales españolas.

In two weeks time my husband has an appointment foe a check-up , to see how his broken ankle is healing after the operation. I think we will have to wait for at least around three hours, and that it would be a good idea to bring a book because there aren't many magazines in Spanish hospitals.
