There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Ella llevaba puesto un vestido verde que hacía juego con sus ojos.

She wore a green dress that matched her eyes.

2. Esas bananas todavía están demasiado verdes.

Those bananas are still too unripe.

Antes de ayer volví a mi casa en las marismas de Barbate y fue un placer ver el paísaje tan verde, que ya huele a primavera. Los olores de las flores, las hierbas y los árboles bajo un sol caluroso me dieron una bienvenida muy agradable.

The day before yesterday I returned to my home on the marshes near Barbate and it was a pleasure to see the green landscape which now smells of spring. The smells of the flowers, the grasses and the trees under a warm sun gave me a most pleasant welcome.

The project is significantly delayed, it is possible that it will take five months longer than expected to complete it.

El avance de la obra está bien verde, es posible que se demoren en entregarla cinco meses más tarde de lo previsto.

¿Como podría usar la palabra "verde" para decir lo mismo compañero Ken? :) - crucesignatus, May 4, 2015
¿green o unripe? :) - crucesignatus, May 4, 2015
Or: The project is signifciantly (or greatly) delayed, it is possible that it will take 5 months longer than expected to complete it. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
Cruce: I used to be in the construction business. Green or unripe were never used in this context. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
Green can be used to mean unripe with fruit or vegetables that turn a different color when ripe. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
Yes, delayed, unripe doesn't work in this sense. - annierats, May 4, 2015
Oh, entiendo, jeje en castellano sí se pueden usar en ese contexto, aunque de una manera coloquial, sobre todo "verde". :) - crucesignatus, May 4, 2015
Green can also mean lacking in experience. He is green behind the ears, he's just a beginner. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
I agree with Ken. :) - rac1, May 4, 2015
Gracias por las correcciones compañeros Ken y Rac. :) - crucesignatus, May 4, 2015
In terms of construction, one can say "The concrete is still green." This means the concrete is uncured or not very hard yet. This might be said because uncured concrete is slightly pale green in color. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
Ok, gracias Ken, tiene el mismo uso en Español, además de indicar inmadurez. - crucesignatus, May 4, 2015
Muy informativo. - jrschenk, May 4, 2015

Actualmente la palabra Verde tiene un significado político porque es utilizado por partidos que enfatizar el medioambiente más de otros partidos. Los Verdes dicen que no podemos tener una economía saludable sin un medioambiente saludable. Creo que es una balanza que será difícil a alcanzar.

These days the word Green has a political significance because it is used by parties which emphasise the environment more than other parties do. The Greens say that we can't have a healthy economy without a healthy environment. I think that it is a balance which will be difficult to achieve.

El libro "¡Qué Verde Era Mi Valle!" fue escrito en 1939 por Richard Ricardo Llewellyn. La película del mismo nombre con Walter Pidgeon y Maureen O'Hara en los papeles principales fue producida en 1941 con John Juan Ford como el director.

The book "How Green Was My Valley" was written in 1939 by Richard Llewellyn. The movie of the same name starring Walter Pidgeon and Maureen O'Hara was made in 1941 with John Ford as director.

An attempt at translating the movie description: The story of a proud and rebellious people who challenged the curse of the valley. About a strange and beautiful love that flourished but later almost fell into ignominy.

Corrección: producida. - crucesignatus, May 4, 2015
In the movie description in Spanish it says "De nn" I am guessing that this was a typo, and it should have been "de un" - DilKen, May 4, 2015
Also...does the word "para" make sense in the Spanish here? I'm thinking that they should have used "pero" so that's how I translated it. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
Nice entry, Ken. :) - rac1, May 4, 2015
I think the names Richard and John should not be translated :) - Raja-jani, May 4, 2015
Gracias a Cruce, Rac & Rajaji: Estoy de acuerdo, Rajaji. No estaba seguro. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
In the above, would "Gracias a Cruce, a Rac & a Rajaji" be better? Should I repeat the "personal a" before each person in the list of names? - DilKen, May 4, 2015
You don't have to repeat them Ken :) 'para' where? - Pablo064, May 4, 2015
Near the top of the picture is a long description, near then end of the description I think it says lozano para luego. I think the para should be pero. - DilKen, May 4, 2015
oh yes, yes it is completely right and about 'nn' it was a typo I guess jeje - Pablo064, May 5, 2015
