There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Al dueño del carro rojo, sus luces están encendidas.

To the owner of the red car, your lights are on.

2. Mateo es dueño de su propia firma de relaciones públicas.

Mateo is the owner of his own public relations firm.

Richard Petty es el dueño de un carro azul rápido--un Superbird (pájaro estupendo). Le encanta girar a la izquierda.

Richard Petty is the owner of a fast blue car--a Superbird. He loves to turn left.

Petty

¿O es el carro azul rápido el dueño de Richard Petty? Quizás.
Or is the fast blue car the owner of Richard Petty? Perhaps.

¡Que viva el rey!

Bueno. The little prince was the owner of an asteroid..... or The little prince was the owner of one asteroid. - DilKen, May 2, 2015
Just remember that to say "a one" in English would be like saying "uno uno" in Spanish. - DilKen, May 2, 2015
En Castellano, generalmente se usan los adjetivos (epítetos) antes que el sustantivo en la poesía, aunque no siempre. :) - crucesignatus, May 2, 2015

A mi esposa le gustaría ser dueña de un nuevo coche, pero debido a que sabe que le compro sólo uno cada década, todavía no ha decidido cuál quiere, aunque le dije que le compraría uno el verano pasado.

My wife would like to be the owner of a new car, but because she knows that I only buy her one each decade, she still has not decided which she wants, even though I told her I would buy one last summer.

Yea, my wife would love the car pictured, but I don't think it is one of her realistic options. :) - bosquederoble, May 2, 2015
It's perfect, this expression will help you to sound natural 'pero como sabe que le compro' This makes me wonder if I could say 'but as she knows that..' - Pablo064, May 3, 2015
I think it is okay, I think most natural might be "but since she knows". :) - bosquederoble, May 4, 2015

Los indígenas de las Amércas no se consideraron como dueños de la tierra más sino como cuidadores de lo que les da la vida.

The indigenous peoples of the Americas did not consider themselves as owners of the land rather as caregivers to that which gave them life.

To English learners: There are times as in this sentence when “people” can be plural.

Hispanohablantes nativos: ¿Puedo usar “más mas” aquí in en vez de “pero”? Otras correcciones, por favor.

Pienso que sería mejor usar: "sino", en lugar de "mas" sin tilde o "pero". :) - crucesignatus, May 2, 2015

Era dueño de muchos apartamientos cochambrosos. La gente lo llamaba "propietario del barrio bajo" o "propietario de tugurios."

He was the owner of many crappy apartments. People called him a slum landlord or slumlord.

Hace un rato, un perro perdido llegó a nuestra casa. No sabíamos lo que teníamos que hacer con él, hasta que yo vi un número de teléfono en su collar. Lo llamé y el dueño del perro vino a buscarlo (llegó para conseguirlo).

A while ago, a lost dog came to our house. We didn't know what to do with him, until I saw a telephone number on his collar. I called it and the owner of the dog came to get it.
