How to use "sea" and "esté"
I'm studying a spanish site that often makes use of these two subjunctive forms of ser and estar. But they are confusing, especially knowing when to use one or the other. For example can one say "Espero que sea alli" for I hope to be there? An explanation of these terms would be great (and probably welcomed by lots of people on SD!)

If you know when to use "ser" and "estar" and there are many different conditions under which you use each one,the problem is half solved. Then If you know when to use the subjunctive, there shouldn't be much of a problem.
First of all, in your example "I hope to be there." You're talking about location. That automatically brings up the verb estar. And as there is no change in subject you can do it almost word for word like English
"I hope to be there". Espero estar allí.
The study of Ser and Estar can take up several chapters in a textbook. The use of the subjunctive can take many many more.
On this site, there are places you can go and find instruction on these matters. We also have members who, when they see this question will be able to provide you with a link or maybe more.
Buena suerte en tus estudios.
