There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile
.

Guidelines:

.

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Instructions for posting a picture

Examples:

.

1. Necesito que me firme el recibo, señor.

I need you to sign the receipt for me, sir.

2. Cincuenta y seis hombres firmaron la Declaración de Independencia.

Fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence.

By now I have signed a contract of twenty pages to have a Spanish bank account, I have signed a contract of some 15 pages in order to have a telephone line with internet access, I have signed the contract to buy my house and I'm waiting to sign a contract with the Electricity board, to have a contract with them , because without a utility bill I can't register that I live here, and without registering as an inhabitant, I cannot rectify the papers for my car. Truly, these days I just sign whatever paper is put in front of me, without reading it, because if I don't I will never be able to fix anything.

Antes de firmar un contrato lee la letra pequeña.

Before signing the contract read the small print.

Cruce, if he is a player, he will 'play for' or be ' attached to' . Linked to doesn't make sense, unless he is a prisoner? - annierats, Apr 21, 2015
I'd say "committed to" is perhaps a better translation - BailaBailaBaila, Apr 21, 2015

En el siglo 19. firmaban los documentos con una pluma y necesitaban un tintero, pero ahora nosotros podemos firmar documentos electrónicamente . El progreso es indiscutible.

In the 19th century the documents were signed with a pen and they needed an inkwell, but now we can sign documents electronically . The progress is indisputable.

El poema que empieza: "La mano que firmó el papel derribó una ciudad.." es de "La Mano que Firmó el Papel" por Dylan Thomas

The poem that begins: "The hand that signed the paper felled a city..." is from "The Hand that Signed the Paper" by Dylan Thomas

En el negocio de la música, si firma un contrato discográfico, son propiedad de la empresa. Por eso muchos cantantes prefieren ser independientes.

In the music business, if you sign a recording contract, you are owned by the company. That's why many singers prefer to be independent.

El momento embarazoso en que tenías que pedir a tu papá que te firmara la boleta de calificaciones.

That embarrassing moment when you had to ask your father to sign the school report

"Homero, ¿me firmas la boleta?"

'Homer, would you sign the school report?'

Can I say 'I need you to firm' or it isn't correct? - Pablo064, Apr 21, 2015
No, "firm" doesn't mean "to sign" in English. You would say "I need you to sign this form." - Winkfish, Apr 21, 2015
He looks like he's up to no good. jejeje - rac1, Apr 21, 2015
I need you to sign these papers ( as Winkfish says). - annierats, Apr 21, 2015
sorry I wrote it wrong I meant sign thank you wink a annie I don't know if is there any difference between 'I need for you to and I need you to' - Pablo064, Apr 21, 2015
No difference, but "need for you" is not as common. Both are equally correct. Actually, as I sit here sipping my rum and thinking about it, they are probably equally used. Amazing how rum can clear your head! Cheers, Tiempo. ;-) - Winkfish, Apr 22, 2015
We might even say, "I need you to sign these documents" :) - sanlee, Apr 22, 2015
Maybe the English words "affirm" and "confirm" have similar roots to "firmar" - ian-hill, Apr 22, 2015

I used subjunctive (tenga) because I'm expressing an emotion. Am I right? - Sassette, Apr 21, 2015
I would say that you do not need the subjunctive mood here as there is no change of subject (person) between the first and second clause: I feel frustrated that I have to sign: Me siento frustradA que tengO que firmar etc... - FELIZ77, Apr 21, 2015
@feliz77 thanks so much. You're good with this stuff! I find it interesting that SD would not let me put your name in caps. - Sassette, Apr 21, 2015
Hi Missy...Another great work, amiga! ♥♥♥ - rac1, Apr 21, 2015
If you use verbs of emotion eg: querer, esperar , desear, etc... then you need the subjunctive if there is a change of subject : Quiero que ella firme el documento = I want her to sign the document ! - FELIZ77, Apr 21, 2015
I hope this makes it clearer. There is also doubt or uncertainty in the mind of the person wanting the action to be carried out as to whether it will be completed - FELIZ77, Apr 21, 2015
and when using the present subjunctive a future implication, eg: Espero que llegue mañana = I hope that he will arrive tomorrow . - FELIZ77, Apr 21, 2015
Great job. - languagenut, Apr 21, 2015
Wow, thanks feliz. The big point I missed (or at least didn't keep in mind) in my studies is that there has to be a change in subject. I won't forget again,.. I hope. - Sassette, Apr 22, 2015
Nice job, Missy! - sanlee, Apr 22, 2015
