There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

.

Please encourage everyone with a vote. smile

.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Anoche sólo dormí cinco horas.

Last night I only slept five hours.

2. ¿Sabías que los koalas pueden dormir hasta veintidós horas por día?

Did you know that koalas can sleep up to twenty-two hours a day?

Cuando era un bebito mi hijo dormía en mis brazos. Todavía lo hace de vez en cuando.

When he was a tiny baby my son slept in my arms. He still does every once in a while.

Los Koalas duermen veintodós horas por día porque su dieta es muy baja en proteína.

Kolas sleep 22 hours a day because their diet is very low in protein.

De niña siempre me dormía en clase, lo que no le gustaba nada a la maestra.

As a little girl I always fell asleep in class, which the teacher didn't like at all.

Espero poder dormirme en la avión esta noche- salimos para nuestro destino esta noche pero no llegaremos hasta mañana- mi esposa siempre duerme con facilidad, pero yo tengo dificultad- sin embargo quisiera divertirme mañana y por eso ojalá que duerma lo suficiente.

I hope to be able to fall asleep on the airplane tonight- we leave for our destination tonight, but don't arrive until tomorrow- my wife always sleeps easily, but I have difficulty- nonetheless I would like to enjoy myself tomorrow and so hopefully I sleep enough.

He was so tired that he fell into a deep sleep as soon as he arrived home!

Con corrección:

Estaba tan cansado que se durmió profundamente en cuanto llegó en casa!

Editor's note/s: I am a little confused here about 'en cuanto.' I have learnt that you should use the subjunctive (mood) following 'en cuanto' but does this only apply in sentences which have a future meaning, or in any sentence after en cuanto? The imperfect subjunctive looks odd /out of place, here! The present subjunctive would not be used as far as I know because the first clause is (written) in the imperfect past and they should both match: both present or both past subjunctive! Please help/advise me! smile

Corrijan mi español si es necesario, por favor smile

When “en cuanto” refers to an idea or time in the future, the subjunctive is used when you conjugate the verb that follows. “En cuanto” works exactly like “cuando”, but since it is so commonly used, it is worth mentioning. The only difference is that “cu - rac1, Apr 17, 2015

I need to sleep more, but I have problems falling asleep, so I just translate until I am tired enough to go to sleep.

Our teacher always said when she entered the noisy class: when the cat sleeps, mice dance.

Lo entiendo, Daniela. Para mí, no es acerca de la temperatura, aunque no puedo abrir la ventana en invierno porque es frígida entonces. Sólo duermo mucho mejor con aire fresco. - jim5489, Apr 17, 2015

Creo que no necesitamos tanto sueño cuando somos mayores. Me duermo temprano, pero entonces me despierto después de cinco o seis horas, el el medio de la noche.. ¡Me molesta mucho! A veces me levanto y estudio español.

I think that we don't need as much sleep when we are older. I go to sleep early, but then I wake up after five or six hours, in the middle of the night. It is very annoying! Sometimes I get up and study Spanish.
