Meaning for index pregnancy

Hello, everybody. I would like to know what "index pregnancy" means:

-A recent research found that women with GDM (Gestationall Diabetes Mellitus) are at a significant increased risk of developing hypertension after the index pregnancy.

-Some mothers had more children during "index pregnancy".
