Literary exercise: The sonnet / Ejercicio literario: El soneto
This exercise consists of writing one Spanish sonnet, and one English sonnet like its translation.
The sonnet in Spanish Language must be this way:
The sonnet must have 14 verses.
Each verse must have 11 metric syllables.
The verses must have distributed in two quatrain and two tercets.
The rhymes must be consonants.
The rhymes, in the quatrains, must have this structure: ABBA ABBA or ABAB ABAB.
In the tercets the rhymes can be ordered in different ways, for example: CCD DDC, CDE EDC, CDE CED, CDE DCE, etc.
The sonnet in English language must be this way:
The sonnet must have 14 verses.
Each verse must have 11 metric syllables.
The verses must have distributed in three quatrains and one couplet.
The rhymes must be consonants.
The rhymes must have this structure: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
You have here an example in a sonnet of Luis de Góngora y Argote. This example has the following structure ABBA ABBA CDE CDE.
A UNA ROSA
Ayer naciste y morirás mañana;
para tan breve ser, ¿quién te dio vida?
¡Para vivir tan poco estás lucida,
y para no ser nada estás lozana!
Si te engañó tu hermosura vana,
bien presto la verás desvanecida,
porque en esa hermosura está escondida
la ocasión de morir muerte temprana.
Cuando te corte la robusta mano,
ley de la agricultura permitida,
grosero aliento acabará tu suerte.
No salgas, que te aguarda algún tirano;
dilata tu nacer para tu vida,
que anticipas tu ser para tu muerte.

A ROSE
Blown in the morning, thou shalt fade ere noon:
What boots a life which in such haste forsakes thee?
Th’art wondrous frolic being to die so soon:
And passing proud a little colour makes thee.
If thee thy brittle beauty so deceives,
know then the thing that swells thee is thy bane;
for the same beauty doth in bloody leaves
the sentence of thy early death contain.
Some clown’s coarse lungs will poison thy sweet flow’r
if by the careless plough thou shalt be torn:
And many Herods lie in wait each hour
to murder thee as soon as thou art born;
nay, force thy bud to blow; their tyrant breath
anticipating life, to hasten death.

En la figura aparece el Puku Puku, Thinocorus Orbignyanus, que es un ave andina, que antes de la llegada de los españoles, hacía las veces del gallo, despertando a las personas con su peculiar canto mañanero: "pukuy, pukuy; pukuy pukuy" del cual deriva su nombre.
THE PUKU PUKU
You lived, you had sung in the sunny hills;
by the flowered valleys, Little Pukuy,
your sweet singings were waking up the thrills
by the deserted mountains, Little Pukuy.
By those thorny roads, you had sung with joy,
Little Pukuy, by snowy roads you walked;
you woke of the dream for the wings deploy,
Little Pukuy, and with the heart you talked.
The people of the mountains wait for you;
Little Pukuy, tell us, where are your songs?
the people of the valleys wait for you
