Diario or Periódico?
What is the difference between these two words? They both mean newspaper. Am I right that el diario is the daily newspaper, and el periódico is the Sunday paper?

They both are newspapers; however, el diaro can be specified as a daily paper while el periódico is said to be a periodic paper. Periódico can be used for all and is the most common way to say newspaper. I think in Argentina they use diario (some other countries) and some newspaper companies have kept the name for their reasons.
La prensa or prensa esrita is also used in some countries.
Para el significado que le estás dando "newspaper" las palabras diario y periódico son sinónimos, es decir significan lo mismo.
In my country we use newspaper. I think that diario is a daily news which is thin and cover news for one day. While newspaper could be daily but also could be for the weekend which summarize news for the whole week, it is thicker and include many advertisement from the area.
Think about:
Newspaper, daily, journal.
