En Escocia en el pasado el día de las bromas de abril no era el 1 abril pero el 13 april cuando se llamaba ‘Gowk’s Day’ o ‘Huntigowk Day’. ‘Gowk’ quiere decir ‘cucú’ en el idioma escocés antiguo, y medio-abril hace el comienzo de la temporada del cucú. Según la tradición vieja, los padres enviaban a sus niños para cazar cucús (= hunt(i)gowk), una ave con fama mística según la mitología celta, creida ser capaz de llegar entre los mundos de los vivos y de los muertos.
Ahora en Escocia celebramos el día en el 1 april y como ‘April Fools’ Day’, y le gastamos bromas a la gente, pero solo antes del mediodía. Si haces una broma después de doce, entonces tú eres el tonto. Para hacer una broma escocesa popular, enviamos a un jovencito ingenuo para ir a una tienda con una lista de cosas a comprar, incluso pintura de tartan, por ejemplo.
In Scotland April Fools’ Day originally fell not on 1 April, but on 13 April, when it was called Gowk’s Day, or Huntigowk Day. Gowk is the old Scots word for cuckoo, and mid-April is the beginning of the cuckoo season. Traditionally, parents would send their children to hunt the gowk, a bird with mystic significance in Celtic folklore, once believed to flit between the realms of the quick (living) and the dead.
Nowadays in Scotland we celebrate it on 1 April and call it April Fools’ Day, playing practical jokes, or pranks, on folk, but only before noon. If you play a joke on someone after midday, then it’s you who is said to be the fool. A popular Scottish prank is to send a young naïve person to a shop with a list of items to buy, including the likes of ‘tartan paint’.

En nuestro país hay un Zoo donde en 1893 vivía un hipopótamo llamado Jonás. Él era el primero hipopótamo del Zoo y muy bien conocido. Desde esta época eran muchos hipopótamos con este nombre. En primero Abril la broma es que la gente deja recados a los conocidos con el numero del Zoo que dice que señor Jonás les buscaba y pidio por una llamada .
