There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Mi vecina está muy puesta en temas de actualidad, igual a como/era fue mi papá, por leyendo los diarios.
My neighbor is well up on current events, just like my dad was, by reading the daily newspapers.
Ahora con los problemas económicos la gente pierde fácilmente su puesto de trabajo y es muy difícil a obtener uno.
