Why did you learn Spanish? Or why are you learning Spanish?

I learned a fair amount of Spanish a few years back to impress one of my amigas mexicana xD Now I am learning it again because I have become absolutely captivated by the many cultures who speak it and I will be visiting some of my friends in Spain this summer! smile

After studying 2 years of Latin in high school, I took Spanish as a Junior. It was my first exposure to a living "foreign" language, and I found that I was finally having fun learning and excelling in something. I began a journey to learn French and to dabble in Japanese, Russian, Chinese, German and any other languages I could encounter. It amazes me that human beings who are basically the same all over the world, have evolved so many ways to communicate their thoughts with physical sound and using parts of the body as no other species on earth.

I've 'dabbled' a lot too, but unfortunately until Spanish, French was the only 'foreign' language that stuck to any useful extent, probably because I 'had' to learn it at school... - Faldaesque, Mar 19, 2015
Sadly by interest in other languages vastly outweighs my ability in them... & there are so many !! - Faldaesque, Mar 19, 2015

I love learning languages but I wanted to learn Spanish when I was a child because I wanted to learn the language of my country of birth: I was born in Lima, Perú.

My parents are English and my dad used to work as an accountant, for an American company in Peru, many years ago. Unfortunately I had to leave Peru with my parents when I was approximately eighteen (18) months old. I have a birth certificate in two or three parts, that is mostly written in Spanish.

When I was at my secondary school in Essex, I had the opportunity to learn Spanish for a year. My first Spanish teacher was a native from Barcelona in Spain, but unfortunately I cannot remember his name. He used to work in a local hotel as a waiter in the town in Braintree.

Siempre he preferido aprender francés.

I began to learn French in that same school. They offered us the chance to learn French or German. I have always preferred to learn French.

Corrijan mi español, por favor smile

Wow, great response! Have you visited Peru in recent years? - LaHojaDeArce, Mar 19, 2015
Thank you, la hoja :) Sadly, no I can't afford to :( - FELIZ77, Mar 19, 2015
I always wanted to learn German properly. My French teacher wouldn't allow me because she accused me of cheating in the French exam (I didn't)... - Faldaesque, Mar 19, 2015
She told my parents I should give up French because I was hopeless at languages. A few years later I passed law exams conducted in French at a French uni & got the equivalent of the D.E.U.G... - Faldaesque, Mar 19, 2015
If only she'd allowed me to do German... :-( - Faldaesque, Mar 19, 2015

If I knew all the languages which I learned in my long life!. By first English; I always use it and read many books. I don't have to tell you, because you know my many mistakes, but I can communicate in words and writing.

In the school ,Russian; but they taught us so badly that we could not have asked for a glass of water, but we had learned Russian literature. I know the Cyrillic alphabet and even now I can cite poems. At school I also learned the Latin language, and this is very useful as the base of all languages in Europe. I learned German and used it in my work, but now I have almost forgotten. At the University I learned French and even now I can read books, but do not think I can talk. I learned Esperanto for distraction, and this is an interesting artificial language but I made the conclusion that English took its place. In my old age, being retired, I started learning the Spanish language and it gives me much joy.

I took Spanish as electives during my English undergraduate degree. After a year of studying it and travelling to Spain for the first time, I decided to make it one of my majors instead of just fill in units.

Spanish is such a beautiful language for me, that the only way I can read poetry is when it is in the Spanish language. It conveys emotion so wonderfully.

I have travelled to Spain and Mexico and loved them both (especially Mexico) and I want to experience all the Spanish speaking world. This keeps me motivated to keep learning even though my progress is so slow.

Please note:

I showed my Spanish in my original response to my Bolivian friend and she corrected it for me. I have crossed through my original wording that was corrected and put all corrections in italics . I am letting you all know because I want you also to learn from my mistakes.
