Georgeir (George) is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. Please correct your entries according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

enter image description here .

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game. .

Remember that banks close early on Saturdays.

2. Hot Doug's, el mejor restaurante de perros calientes del mundo, cerró sus puertas por última vez el año pasado.

Hot Doug's, the best hot dog restaurant in the world, closed its doors for the last time last year. .

A veces una boca cerrada habla más elocuentemente que una abierta.

Sometimes a closed mouth speaks more eloquently than an open one.

Katy, "ventoso" is an adjective. "Hace frío y viento" or ie: "Hoy es un día frío y ventoso" ("frío" is both noun and adjective) - 005faa61, Mar 16, 2015
Thanks so much Julian. Would you believe I had viento then changed it. argh. - katydew, Mar 16, 2015

Puede ser difícil pero de vez en cuando a hay cerrar puertas y concluir capitulios para llevar adelante en su vida.

It can be difficult but once in a while you have to close doors and finish chapters to move forward in life.

you must have consulted porcu on this with today's projects (i.e., similar messages) - Sassette, Mar 15, 2015
It´s more natural to say "seguir adelante". To use "llevar" we say "llevar acabo" but this would sound strange with the topic of life unless you are dying and talking about everything you have wanted to do in life - 005faa61, Mar 16, 2015

Hay veces cuando es necesario cerrar ciclos de tu vida, pero eso no se trata de cerrar puertas sino abrir nuevas oportunidades.

There are times when it is necessary to close cycles of your life, but that is not a question of closing doors but opening new opportunities.

Al salir de México, la última cosa que hice fue cerrar mi cuenta bancaria aunque todavía tengo la chequera guardada y curiosamente, extraño más la fuente Diana que los pesos.

Upon leaving Mexico, the last thing I did was to close my bank account although I still have the checkbook put away and curiously, I miss more the Diana fountain than the pesos.

TipaGal, it is confusing because Diana, Roman goddess, was viewed as Artemis, the Greek goddess and appearently they were both animal hunters - 005faa61, Mar 15, 2015

@JulianChivi You are correct. For unexplained reasons in the article I read they changed it from her hunting beasts to hunting stars. Maybe animal rights groups changed it :-) - Sassette, Mar 15, 2015

Mi esposa siempre me acusa de no cerrar recipientes de comida adecuadamente así que cuando ella agarra uno por la tapa, el resto del frasco se cae y los contenidos se derraman por todas partes.

My wife always accuses me of not closing food containers adequately so that when she grabs one by the lid, the rest of the jar falls and the contents spill all over.

Los paraguas que funcionan con mecanismos de pellizco pueden ser muy difíciles de cerrar. De todos modos odio los paraguas.

Umbrellas that operate with pinch mechanisms can be very hard to close. Anyway I hate umbrellas.

(When I check my first Spanish sentence in a translator, I get gibberish, but I don't know how to fix it--or even if it's really wrong. It seems right to me. Please correct me if I need it.)

I agree. If there are umbrellas that are high quality that work better it would probably be more expensive and I don't want to put much money into items that I might lose. I can leave umbrellas behind easily. - Sassette, Mar 16, 2015
